Elastic on knit pants.

I ordered some knit pants to wear to my exercise class and have worn them and washed them. Noticed that they are tight in the waist. I wear a 16 petite and ordered large. When checking the tag, I noticed they were a medium. I presume these were a 16-18 size, but I certainly don't think it should be a medium. Anyway, the elastic has been sewn to the knit fabric instead of being able to run the elastic through a waistband, so to put in a larger elastic I would have to tear the whole thing apart. Does anybody have any suggestions. I know it takes a long time to get a reply on this forum, but I could use some help please, someone. Barb

Having dealt with lots of kids pants made like this, unfortunately i have to tell you that there is nothing that you can do short of opening up the entire waistband to remove the elastic.

Grasping at straws here: does one side look like a chain stitch? Maybe it can be undone quickly if it is.

Only other thing I can think of is to make decorative triangles out of a coordinating knit and sew them into the side seams...wide end in the waist band and tapering to nothing in the hip....esp since they are exercise gear, you could add that decoration. Or make it out of a matching fabric and wear longer tops so the seams aren't noticeable.
