How far do your cabinet pulls project?

If you have pulls on your cabinets, how far out do they project? We've bought these mission style pulls that look fab with our Stickley mission oak, but they only project 0.875", making it impossible to get our fingers behind to open. You sort of have to just grab the sides and pull instead of actually inserting your fingers behind them. This is different than the style we've had for years and I just wonder if it's something we'd get used to, or if we'd always feel like we couldn't get a good enough grip on the pulls. I fear I'm overthinking this, but the pulls haven't been installed yet and can be returned. I just don't want us to make a mistake, as much as we love the look of these things.

These pics are from the seller's website.

This is the style we've had for years. Lots of "grab space" on these babies.

DH has big hands and he's especially concerned about his comfort level with the proposed pulls. I really hate to return them, because I love em - but I know functionality must come first.

These are other current considerations ... Both very different but I like them both.

I'd return them. They are very pretty, but you'll soon tire of the awkward way you will have to grab them. There are so many other options in pulls that project out enough that you won't have to do this.

What's your budget per pull, if you don't mind my asking. It just would help in searching for something you might like.

Or you'll just get used to them and never think about it again. I like 'em.

I have those same pulls on my laundry room cabinets. After reading your post, I had to go check and see if my fingers fit behind the pull. Since I had to go check, they obviously aren't a problem for me. I can actually get my fingers behind it and by my measuring they don't even project the 0.875 that you noted. My husband's fingers probably don't fit. He's sleeping so I can't have him demonstrate how he opens the cabinets. He's never complained about them. I think you could get used to them but if you can find something that suites you better and that's in your budget the change them out. You probably can't return them but you could always donate them to Habitat.

Thanks so much, and especially to badgergal for the very helpful photo! I'm still not determined to return these pulls, because I really do love them. I have extras, so perhaps the thing to do is "install" one on a practice board to see whether they'll be as awkward as we fear. They came from Overstock, and were an absolute steal at $2.33 each. They are very well made, which surprised me at that price. I don't really have a budget, but because these are so nice and so inexpensive, I'm still leaning strongly in their direction.

They're nice pulls, but if they're bugging you'd I'd probably return them. We went with cup pulls for a while and after a year of use, oddly, we still weren't used to them. Went back to the original pulls with a 1" space. I would want some room in there.

I have ORB cup pulls (Avante) on the drawers and more decorative antique brass pulls (Amerock) on the hutch. I initially looked online at Myknobs.com, but then decided to shop locally since we were also buying door hardware and I really wanted to get a feel for all of it. I could have saved a good bit buying the same cabinet hardware online, but at that point I was so sick of decision-making I took the easy way out and bought locally.

Have you visited any local shops? Do that and then check online.

I have arthritis in my fingers and the relief and feel of a pull was really important for me as banging my fingers on a cabinet can be painful. I wouldn't buy a pull unless I could actually feel it and all the better if it was attached to something so that I could put my fingers in them. Have you looked at Lee Valley Catalogue? Lots of selection with really good prices. The inside relief of mine is 1 1/4".

I'm pretty sure they have a mission style section.lee valley hardware catalogue

If they are from Overstock, you have a certain amount of time to return them without penalty. I'd put them on a sample board today. You might find that they work fine for you which will be one less thing to think about. I do hope they work for you as they are very nice looking.

Well ... DH has decided that he likes the pulls so much that he will LEARN to adjust to them if needed. So they're staying. We've tried out a prototype and think they just aren't what we're USED to, but we can get used to them. Thanks so much for helping me think this through!

Jen, I just asked hubby to borrow his hands so I could measure his fingers, got a smart (wink) remark from him, but he did let me measure them. If the space between the door and the inside of the pull is point 875 (that's 7/8" by the way) then unless your hubby has bigger fingers than mine does, these should work just fine.

Auntjen, my husband is a tall guy, 6'4" with large hands. The pulls I have are too shallow and after two years he is wearing the finish off of cabinets. This is happening right where his fingers hit the cabinet doors as he pulls them open. I am going to look for some deeper pulls.

Never thought about that aspect of shallow pulls PowerMuffin. Very good point.

Diane, that's exactly what's happened on our trash/recycle cabinet. I chose a handle different from the rest because I wanted to be able to hang a towel from it. Even though there's a foot operated door opener for that cabinet dh rarely uses it and instead grabs the handle. The paint above it is worn.

Jen, something to consider with the hardware you chose. If any of it will be on lower cabinets or drawers your clothes might tend to get caught on it. That happens to me every now & then on the dishwasher which has a similarly designed handle.

uncomfortable or tight pulls would drive me crazy. I'm sure I would adapt to some degree, but I'd rather have something comfortable. is there a store nearby that sells lots of pulls to figure out what is comfortable for you? there is a store nearby me which sells many many pulls and has them displayed so you can try them. if your husb goes looking at pulls specifically he might see something he likes as much and are easy to use... you'll both be using them multiple times every single day...

He's surprisingly insistent that we keep what we have. I'm just as surprised that he loves these pulls so much, but it pleases me that he's taking such an interest in the décor for a change! (He's really excited about having a new house. He's never liked older homes, and has not enjoyed living in a 1940s house that has always needed something done to it.)

Thank you for these additional considerations. Although I do believe we're determined to go ahead with what we've purchased, I will discuss your thoughts with DH. Y'know ... just in case. ;-)

Jen, the more I thought about it, the more I thought that seven eighths of an inch isn't too little at all so I measured some of our knobs and pulls. They were all smaller.

The problem with pulls like that is you may rub off or dull the cabinet finish on the sides of them if you rub your fingers against the cabinet a lot.

Justgotabme- thank you so much for measuring and reporting back! Your input has been very helpful to me as we make this new house transition. :-)
