Im going to try and do my best to keep it alive. Cant wait to see something that will help to identify it. I "googled for an hour looking for any association between "mango" and "tendrils" :-)

I would have guessed a small chayote mistaken for a mango seed. But you saw the fruit.

It seems almost impossible that it is truly related to a true mango.

looks like something else. I started a few mango trees from seeds for fun. They don't look like that vine.

What mix did you use in the pot? Is it possible the mango never germinated at all and a stray seed from something else grew instead? Have you felt down into the mix to see if the mango seed is still there? I've grown mango from a seed and your description doesn't sound like a mango seed at all.

good thought Floral, but I got the seed from the fruit and put it in the pot with the green bud showing at the top of the soil in the beginning. The seed is over 2 inches long, so it is hard to miss. :-)

not much change in growth today.

Im going to ask my friend where he got the mango and go there and get another one or two, or three..... and see if the results are the same or different.

Maybe it is a weird hybrid and has reverted back to an original parent.

My hope is that the source of the fruit will be the same.

You say your friend bought your mango from a store. Considering how many options stores have for commercially grown mangos and how often they restock, it would be a stretch to find 3 more just like yours from the same source.

I hope it does turn out to be some weird hybrid mango vine! Keep us posted. Your photo doesn't show any leaves, so I'm wondering if the leaves are like those of a mango.

With more thought. I would say something cross pollinated the flower is a possibility.

There is no way something could cross pollinate with a mango to produce a vine with tendrils.

Alright! I looked at a Choko vine on line and YEP that sure looks like the leaf on the one I have. The leaves are just starting to get big enough to identify.

I took a picture with the dirt pulled away from the seed so you all can see that it does look like a mango seed. ( Fruit had green and red skin, yellow flesh and tasted like one too???? )

OK new line of "googling" to do tomorrow. How to take care of this puppy! LOL

One flower... thats all I ask. ha ha

I found another picture someone posted showing a sprout growing out of a mango seed pod, and the sprout appears to have little tendrils on it:

Yep that looks like a tendril. At least it has leaves that resemble a Mango.

Those are not tendrils in the latest picture. That is just the normal young growth of a mango seedling, probably slightly etiolated and leaning towards the light. It doesn't look strange at all to me. Tendrils are not merely a twining stem. They are separate structures growing from the stem which wrap around any available support. The OP 's plant clearly has true tendrils and is not a Mango.

i planted one too and just looked it up i have the same plant coming from my mango seed mine is about six inches now hoping it survives at least i know that others exist now i was going crazy trying to figure out why it has vines coming out of the top lol

Did your "mango" taste very bland, not acidic, very faint taste of mango, if at all? Mango seeds have a very tough fibrous shell. I think what you ate was a chayote, choko, Sechium edule, a member of the gourd family with somewhat pear shaped slightly flattened fruit, pale green, with about 6 longitudinal grooves and white and crunchy flesh. Your plant looks like a vine, has tri-lobed leaves and what looks like tendrils. Mango seedlings have straight sturdy stems, the leaves are long, strap-like.

I have a similar situation. I planted a store bought mango seed with green sprouts growing out of it and it's growing like a vine. I'm confused but glad to know I'm not the only one.
