Sneaky vines...

Do you ever take a picture off the wall, and discover a vine or two beneath? This one made it around behind my desk, up the wall behind family photos, and stuck out a peduncle when I wasn't looking. Didn't think to take a picture before I'd wrapped it back around into the pot, but here's the bloom :)

Thanks laticauda, I've had it for about 3 years now. Bought as a mail-order cutting from Joni at SRQ, stuck it in the wrong potting soil in a huge pot, and have been chopping off vines and rooting them back beside the parent for a while now. I neglect it horribly except when over-watering because I've forgotten and it's starting to shrivel. The only thing it has going for it is a ton of bright indirect light and I always water with the cast off water from the fish tank. Can't explain it, the thing just grows like a monster.

My pubicalyx and carnosa all have always bloomed all summer and thrown vines every direction, and I just thought that's how Hoyas were. Until I had a run-in with the macgillivrayi and spent a solid 18 months killing each successive cutting as it died in spectacular ways, I'd never met a hoya that didn't like my grow conditions. (Thanks to some very good advice I got here, the macgillivrayi and I are finally getting along.)

Good luck with your little one :-)

I don't think I'll even try a mac. Unless I get it for free (may still turn it down for fear of heartbreak). A rooted cutting may change my mind though lol.

Maybe one of the mac hybrids I'm hearing so many wonderful things about, like how it takes the "hard" out of them and puts some "hardiness" in there. (See what I did there? *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nidge*)

Do you have picts of your mac now? I think I remember reading your post about the problems you were having.

Oh, sorry to go off topic like that.

What I really meant to ask was: "how did the flowers/peduncle react to you moving the blooms?"

Having trouble posting pics from mobile, sorry. My onychoides/archboldiana hybrid is perfectly happy, and the mac is doing ok. Hybrid might be the easier option.

Never occurred to me that they might blast the bloom on being moved around. Hadn't been a problem in the past...

It looks better than my lacunosa rooted cuttings! Bravo!

And the wee arch/ony hybrid I got last month. It's doubled in size since arriving, no doubt due to the humidity treatment it got on arrival.

All the pubicalyx cultivars are fantastic growers and easy bloomers. Some are a little less generous - for me, 'Pink Silver' is stingy, probably because it's my favorite! And I like the fragrance, though some people find it off-putting.

Macgillivrayii is nothing to fear! Don't get me wrong - it CAN be temperamental, but even if it starts to show signs of being mad, you can almost always get it to come back. Once you get the hang of it, which means letting it dry between waterings BUT not letting it stay dry TOO long, it'll grow like gangbusters. I have my main one and starts to sell, and they're all growing aggressively right now. Here's the big mama...

And check out how it's grabbed a rope light and twined itself up to the roof glass!

One vine going the other direction decided to loop up through a chain from which my 'Pink Silver' is hanging, and I didn't get it disentangled in time, so now I'm just waiting for the vine to mature so I can cut it and not let that vine go to waste. In the meantime, it has to stay put!

    Denise,

YaY you get a new plant out of your carelessnes, if only all of life were such serendipity!

Your plants look great! Oh, you're in Nebraska? Howdy Neighbor!

Thanks Denise, you've given me hope - what a beautiful mama plant! I agree on the pubicalyx, as all three of my cultivars grow strongly. Am just now getting the hang of how mac likes to be watered.

Lati - where are you in OK? Do you know of the Central Oklahoma Cactus & Succulent Society? I get their newsletter every month (as I'm the editor of the local C&S club newsletter) and their editor does an outstanding job! Looks like it's a nice-sized club. If you like C&S and live anywhere nearby where they meet, you should check it out! Here's a link to their FB page. (And, in case you're interested, here's one to our FB page!)
