I presume the counter top was drilled (twice) for recessed outlets more often used in floors, positioned directly under the lamp bases to avoid a run of power cord, & that all kitchen circuits are GFIC by code. But the sink is also in that island and "puddles happen" even if not from the sink but a spilled drink. Were you able to take any additional precautions? Also, was there any discussion of what to do later on if lamps are no longer wanted on the counter?
