Cornelian cherry next to maple

Hello,

I am starting to establish an edible yard in my front yard. I have a maple tree that is about 15 feet high. It has very shallow roots that have eaten a big patch of sod around it. I was planning to mulch this patch and make it into a bed. I wanted to put two cornelian cherries in the bed. I have read that cornelian cherry trees can be grown in partial shade of a larger tree. Will the maple let it grow or is it better to completely remove the maple and put the cornelian cherry trees in. There are other smaller bushes that will also go in this bed. My question is can I work around the existing tree or take it out and put my new plants in.
