Bugs on leaves have nothing to do with safety of the fruit unless there's been a bit too much poison used to kill those bugs. In my yard, if the plant grows tomatoes and has enough foliage left to soldier on, it matters not if the leaves make it in one piece.

Thanks for the response. I guess I wasn't sure if they were holes from bugs or something wrong with the plant. As this has been a learning experience/fun thing to do with the kids, we are just happy that tomatoes have actually grown and don't mind if the leaves don't survive.
