Modern fireplace dilemma

Hi there, the 1930s house we're in the process of buying has recently had a new modern fireplace installed in the sitting room. I'd like to redecorate this room to warm it up and would tend towards more traditional fireplace. But it's not our forever home and don't want to break the bank on what is a perfectly functional (if not to my tastes) fireplace... Is there a way to incorporate this modern fireplace into a more traditional scheme? The best I can think of is covering the fire with some kind of screen... But then no mantel as it's hung quite high? Or do I just bite the bullet and buy and fit a new fireplace - if so, what style?!

You might consider painting out the two tone framing, and placing a vintage surround over it ( not fit too exactly to it because you are not trying to fool anybody- or tiled in the gap, if you are!). You might also consider tiling the wall up to the molding in lieu of a mantel.

Here is how I look at it. Your ceiling has Art Nouveau detail. I would consider the fireplace to be Art Deco inspired at the very least. It has square corners and it is black and silver. (I'm guessing it's silver and not white.) Those are three of the distinguishing characteristics of Art Deco.

So, I would say you have a Deco/Nouveau inspired living room. For years those two styles have been used with many traditional styles. Put what furniture you want and have into the room and see how you feel about it in 3-6 months. I'm guessing it won't bother you at all now that you have a name for it. :D

Quick search on Google for art nouveaux decorating ideas, first images of results were almost exactly like yours. Room included sofas very similar to yours. If I knew how to post images using Kindle, I'd send images to you.

What if you bought and installed a reclaimed fireplace surround. Might find something at a salvage company or Habitat's 'Restore'. Affix to wall, caulk, and paint.

Installing a mantle and raised wrap around threshold...maybe high and wide enough to sit on..
