I don't want to live with another Honey-colored parquet and my floor can't be sand it so the only choice is to paint in reach dark matte color. My floor guy is telling me that if we paint then I will not see any wood grains. Why not?

I am with Sophie. The floors are beautiful. If it were me, I would get a second opinion on the sanding and refinishing the floors just to make doubly sure that it can't be done. Two additional things to consider. 1. Dark floors show everything. They are so hard to keep looking clean. 2. Is this your forever home? Painted hardwoods appeal to only certain buyers. So if you will sell in a few years, you might want to consider installing a floating floor over and removing when you sell.

Because paint is opaque. How are going to get the shine off? You will have to sand it off I think. Once you remove the coating, you should be able to apply a dark stain and paint it over with a clean poly. Then you would be able to see the wood grain. Are you saying it can't be sanded because there isn't enough wood layer left?

Yes, it can't be sanded because there isn't enough wood layer left. The only can be done is buff and applying another coding of clear finish. But then I will end up with the same Honey-colored wood. That what I'm trying to change))

I think the paint will fill in the lines. Are the edges of the parquet beveled? I don't think you are going to like it painted like that. It will not look anything like the picture you posted. Also, I don't think it will wear well. So your options are buff and clear coat or possibly buff and tinted coat or replace it all. How about some nice area rugs?

Yes, rugs are must in this building but this floor does not go with furniture and the new colors of the walls

The floor is beautiful. If you want a darker stain and there is not enough wood left to sand then I suggest you save your money and install new hardwood when you can afford.
Painting your floors will not solve your problem. Ask whomever is giving you this advice if they stand by their word and what will they do if you hate it?

Here's a picture of what it might look like. Are they going to prime the floors before painting? Maybe if they put on very thin coats of paint and let it dry completely between each coat, you will still see the lines a little.

Gray, gray, gray. Get away from the gray. please. Put a nice coating of poly & buy some area rugs instead. You will not be sorry.

Light sanding shouldn't be a problem. You've got nothing to lose trying it in the closets. Who knows maybe it'll take off enough to do the dark transparent stain that you like, which would look fantastic. Be brave! lol

Does anyone heard of mordant

Is it dye? I think I heard of it in a textile class. Not sure.

I thought mordant was a reagent used to fix dye.

Please post pictures for us of your painted floor. During the process and when complete. Would love to see how it turns out.

1. The remover - called zipstrip, completely remover down to the original wood.

2. then apply mordant - it comes with different colors. I like mixture coffee with milk with a bit grey tone

3. Matte finish

According to the internet Mordant is a chemical substance that holds dye in place - fixes it to what you apply it to - used in fabrics as well. Makes sense. I think.
