Thank you. The contractor put doubts in my husbands head since he said it looks good and he's not sure how it would look painted white. So my husband and I were going back and forth because I think I want it white, because I think it still looks dated with it wood, like why get rid of the paneling because it still looks dark.

I would paint the trim.............I'm wondering why the ceiling downlights seem to be on the wrong side of the ceiling beams. The position of the beams seem to block the downlights' ability to highlight the face of the fireplace.

Beverly thank you for the visual! I'm such a visual person I was having a hard time! I'm not sure about the lights, those are the only two lights in our whole living room . It was like that when we bought it. The house was built in 1974.

Can someone do a rendering where all the ceiling trim and the beams are painted white please? I think that might look best.

My SIL says paint the beams white too, but they are a rough texture... And I think they'd bring out the wood floor.... Hmmm... I'm so confused

Mark what program do you use to do the renderings?

Maybe a driftwood finish instead? Still works with the dark doors

I would keep the beams dark to tie in the dark floors.

Paint the crown moulding white first and see how the beams look with your floors.

Your doors is dark wood. Do you have other dark wood doors or wood in the house ?

Yes we have all dark hollow doors down the hallway. I really want to do the trim pieces and paint white... With new hardware eventually.

Granted there is no white moulding on top of my inspiration picture. I really wish they would have taken it down. Oh well...

If you have dark wood doors then it makes sense to keep the beams the color they are in my opinion. :)

Can't tell from your picture if the beams form a centered rectangle in your room. If they do, another option to consider would be to leave the beams dark, but paint everything else your wall color, including the crown and slanted part. I think you will need to get more can lights for the other end of the rectangle and for the sides so that they are evenly spaced.

Yes it's a big rectangle. And then slanted beams. It's a very large room so I can't get a whole picture but here it is in two pictures.

Hi Melissa, first congrats on your beautiful space! Also love your inspiration photo!

Maybe I missed this and my apologies if so.....but is there any way that the crown could be taken off while keeping the beams in place so that it could be more like your inspiration photo?

We have wood beams in our family room area too and really like the look of the beams without any additional millwork at the ceiling area.

Also like the idea of adding more can lighting, as suggested above, if that's a do-able option.....as well as adding a wider white baseboard.

Thank you Avery. No, I don't think it is a viable option because they put sheetrock on top and up to the crown moulding over existing same brown paneling. So if we took it down I think we would risk the new sheetrock and paint job, and we would still have to add some moulding there because I think they used 1/2" sheetrock on top of existing paneling.

Well then in that case, yes I understand the dilemma.....that is a difficult choice!

Question, will the new baseboard trim look similar to the ceiling trim (in regards to size, style)? If so, then I would probably choose to have the ceiling trim be the same color as the baseboard.

If not, then I admit I wouldn't know what to choose yet. I'll think about it for a bit and let you know......

in the meantime, I say go with your gut and Mark's renderings are very helpful!

The size of the baseboards will be the same size as the others through our house... Which is the standard size.

Painting the thin moulding the same colour as your ceiling will almost make it disappear as your eye won't stop on the currently contrasting dark colour. I think that will give you the best chance of getting the look of your inspiration picture :)

I would paint it the same colour as the wall so that it disappears.

I think keep the beams the stain they are. Adds some more dimension to the room. And the moulding to be white.

Here is one coat of paint on it they are finishing it tomorrow! I love it so much more!! Thanks again everyone!
