Living Room help please!

Hello Houzz,

I've recently bought an apartment in NY and finding myself in a design challenge both with the color palette and pulling the furniture together. The walls are BM Stonington Gray. The couch is oatmeal. I added a Moroccan carpet with reds/ blacks/ golds and then the gold chair in the corner. There is an additional space 60"x72" I was originally thinking to add a Barcelona Chair but now confused about the theme and colors. I'm aiming for modern with accent colors. Any suggestions on what to do with the space and the palette? Does the carpet pull it together or throw it off?

I'd move the floor lamp to the other side of the sofa or behind the chair. I hate to say this but they red pillows aren't really working for me. Can you post a closer pic of the rug?

You're off to a fabulous start! I don't think you need another chair. The carpet isn't really working; is there someplace else you can use it? What is to the left of the floor lamp when your back is to the TV?

Thank you so much for the responses. I'm attaching a closer picture of the rug. There is empty space now to the left of the lamp, this is where I'm contemplating a barcelona chair. The cables are the reason for the couch is where it is but for $100 could be worth it to switch it around.

That is a beautiful rug, and it would be a shame not use it- what would you think of placing it over a larger sisal, roughly this ratio?

With the furniture flipped, your floor lamp will balance well alongside a chair in the back left corner, with TV beside. that allows you to place your second chair mid room facing the windows, and a side table (and lamp, if you like) next to the sofa arm. You will still have space in the front left area, but not as large. Casegoods or bar are still a good idea in this spot.

Horizontal placement of artwork over the sofa will give a more modern feel.

I agree with studio10001. I would just put a larger, neutral rug underneath your current one, which BTW is beautiful! Do you have any need for a desk or dining table or even better, one that functions as both? As a city dweller, I know the importance of space and the hassle of getting furniture in/out of your building. Don't buy something unless you love it or need it. Can you post a pic of the other side of the room?

Here's how a sisal rug looks under your current one. I also included pillow options. Let me know what you like/dislike (I don't take offense so be honest) and I'll adjust accordingly.

Here's another color sisal and a neutral pillow with your existing ones, which I think makes a big difference. Both rugs are from Pottery Barn and pillows from Crate & Barrel.

How about a large giclee print to tie it all together. See this one I did for a home decorated by Design the Senses. www.ldanielsart.com Lisa Daniels

    Or something like this:

The flat looks great. I would add calm colors and the big furnitures you have looks great. In my oppinion the glass table and style does not match the existing carpet.

Thank you so much all for the suggestions and the design lay outs. it's really helpful to have the visuals as to where to go. I think you are right that I need to add warmer/ neutral colors which I can see now. Appreciate all the input!!

Hi I like the look you have so far, but you definitely need to work on the accent wall behind the sectional.

How about doing something similar to the mural done in this project but with red http://sainteriordesignstoronto.com/fire-to-the-rain.html

What U.S. space by sofa and lamp. Eating area? The rug us to small and dark go a bolder color and 8x10 a contemporary look, to fit room. A big 5 foot art oil in bold colors contemporary . Over sofa hang 7" from top. Get a print for panels like a chevron or Greek key. Use a color from rug as a accent. I like yellow. Then add pillows in that color to sofa. You could go a black and white look. With black n white panels on windows. And a black n white cow hide rug IKEA sells. Art over sofa will help. Make sure it's very big. A garden stool next to chair in black. A room divider like a wood screen could be use to separate space. Add potted big tall plants to corners for texture.

Just saw comment about space. I would put a round table and chairs there for eating. More chairs will not work there. Check IKEA they have some great deals.

Agree that the rug is pretty but not to scale. I like the idea of the large sisal underneath and turning the sofa. The room will feel more open with the longer piece close to the back wall. Then you can define the areas with rugs. Maybe use your small rug under a table and chairs for two at the front of the room :)
