Lorraine, They should be kept in a shady spot or filtered sunlight area for at least a couple of weeks after being grafted.

Then introduce to sunlight after you know the grafts have taken.

Wow didn't know. They have been in the sun all day. Will put in shade now. However what about the plants needing the sun most of the day?

It will not hurt the trees to not have the sun all day if they are not in bloom. Unfortunately, this is one of the factors we have to be aware of when doing grafting. Most times we are grafting onto root stock (one vertical stem or mutli, which leaves are off anyhow) and we make allowances. They need to be in a shady spot for atleast 10-11 approx., then you can take off the plastic and see if they have taken. Then introduced slowly to full sun over a period of time.

Mary, Kirk and a few others have done more than I and if they see this, they will comment and let you know.

Lorraine, this is a good question and I believe I know why, but I cannot explain the science behind it. The scions (grafted pieces) need time to connect through cambium layer, that is if they do.

You can wrap grafting tape around the join of scion and root stock, but this should also be enclosed in a baggy to keep humid. If kept in sunny spot, then it will become too moist inside bag. This will create rot.

The grafts that I have right now are done the way Marie has shown us in the past and similar in a YouTube post.

Rick is right on every point, Lorraine. The sun just dries out both the stock and scion too fast before they have had the chance to fuse together. That is also why you need to bag the graft--to keep the exposed cuts from drying out and sealing separately.
