You seem to have some green that is working in the pillow and the bar stools. I'd want a 3-seater sofa, two accent or swivel chairs and a moderate sized lounge chair.

I was just looking online for oatmeal tweed sofas. I think it would be too dark. I would suggest a warm Ivory instead. Depending on your budget and location I would definitely recommend not buying online. You may need to get a custom fabric. I'd look at Macy's, Rooms to Go etc. Here is a sofa in a color I would recommend.

I'm in a medium midwestern city and we have no shopping ha! But, Ashtonchic, that is seriously so close to what I think I want. I absolutely won't buy anything I haven't sat on. Hi kksmom. I've been looking for a recliner myself. I sat in this Natuzzi at a local store here in Florida and was really impressed with the comfort. I also really like the clean lines and the fact that it doesn't scream "recliner".

I think nice warm rich brown leather would look good for recliners. Kat's natuzzi one above has great modern lines. Make sure your sofa fabric has a lot of texture if you get leather chairs. For coffee table I was thinking maybe a driftwood gray to set off your beautiful fireplace. Also end tables with lamps. I would do colored shades. Not necessarily blue but maybe red?

The fireplace does look really dark in the photos. Can you see it better in these pics? The recliner is navy and the cornices are a chocolate fabric that actually does look really good in the room. I do think sticking with tans is probably my best option. I had to take one of the ivory curtains down to wash it as my grandson got it dirty. He is two. That black chair in the corner doesnt have to stay either

I really like your fireplace and cornice boxes at window. They give architectural interest to the room. Those lampshades are from Etsy and this shop will work with you to do custom shades. Although brown chairs would work, it would be better to go light with chairs in similar color as couch. Is there a reason you want brown? Keep accessories bright. Here are a few more examples. No, no real reason for more brown, other than I guess it goes and it's neutral. I do love that wall art but it's too pricey for me. The pillows are beautiful. I am leaning towards a chair and couch similar to these but I also wonder if grey tones wouldn't work as well. This pic is from the store. I would have to have the pieces made. Then definitely some nice pillows and maybe shades.

That recliner has some nice lines as well. Are there different options for the leather? This Natuzzi cocoa brown has a nice tone to it. Would you consider something along these lines versus a darker brown?

To get some lightness in the room as you make changes:

--Paint the fireplace surround white. This will tie it to the two tall windows.

--Remove the cornices and hang your drapes--perhaps some new ones in a pattern of white and tan, or white and an accent color from near the ceiling to the floor. Sorry about the cornices, but they shorten wonderful tall windows and chop them up.

--Get two complementary arm chairs on legs--one can be a recliner in a solid like the one katinparadise suggested previous, the other with similar lines in patterned upholstery to face the TV. Or do two identical recliners if they're small scaled. Put small side tables next to each chair on instead of a coffee table.

--Keep your current sofa, but get an amazing wood or iron and glass coffee table--round or rectangular.

--Add modern white drum shades to your lamps.

--Think about getting a white storage system off bookshelves and a shelf for the TV on the wall where the TV is now for books, accessories, and the TV. Or get a very long console table on legs for the TV that's much wider than what you have.

Do you have a fabric store nearby? I would suggest painting a board with your wall color and go to a fabric store and see if the beige you have in mind and the brown and/or gray go with the wall color. You could pick a fabric with a print you really like and use those colors. Lot's of ways to skin a cat! I would just recommend sticking with a limited palette. You've already shown you have good taste. So it's a matter of figuring out what you want!

Good ideas. You've all given me some awesome ideas. I think we're getting closer and I have a medium brown leather sample that is close to or exactly the same as the color katinparadise posted. I think I'll just do hubby's recliner in that and maybe the fabric for the other chair and possibly a new couch in the same. I do have fabric stores and a couple craft stores, I like that idea ashtonchic, of bringing in a paint sample. I am kind of thinking of removing the cornices, problem is I have the same window treatment style in the breakfast nook. So, I don't know, something to think about. They look worse in the pictures than they actually are. :) I'll attach a picture of the kitchen to show you what I mean. Thank you all so much, It sure helps to get a fresh set of eyes and all this great advice.

With that beautiful view of the green fields, I can see how green could be a great continuing accent for you. Not a fan of the cornices though.

Here are two ceiling-to-floor examples of drapes on long windows. You're view is amazing, particularly the sky--almost like a vertical landscape painting. The cornices break up the view. If you need shades at night or to block sunlight, simple accordion cellular shades that you can push all the way up can be flanked by the drapes.

That navy sofa is intriguing, but I am too chicken to go with anything other than brown or grey probably!

I wouldn't add any more browns or tans to this room since you want to keep the latte walls. I really think you will find the room too drab. Blues and greens look beautiful with tans/browns. Navy is ok if you plan to have more brightly colored pillows/accents around the room. Otherwise, it may add to the dark look in the room. Teals or aquas, and a third color such as the orange you are drawn to would look fabulous! Don't let fear guide your decisions or you will never have a room that makes you feel joyful when you walk into it :)

I forgot to mention, the views are beautiful and relaxing. How about those shades of greens and blues to tie the outside in with the interior?

Curtains, pillows and art are always great places to bring in your colors. I understand your need to keep your large pieces in neutral colors. They're a big investment and not something you're likely to want to change in a few years if you are no longer in love with them. The only place I can see an issue with panels is by your fireplace. You don't have enough room in the sides of your windows right next to the fireplace. You could, however, put one panel on the outer edge of each window.

Just weighing in with housegal and deco to say the cornices really need to go away.

One other thing I'd do: I think your furniture arrangement is basically good, but I would pull the sofa closer to the TV stand, then pull the loveseat (or the chair that replaces it) off the wall so people walk behind it instead of walking through the middle of the seating area.

It doesn't look like it in the picture, but the loveseat is pulled out about a foot from the wall, it can't really go much further because then it leaves that stupid recliner (ha!) kindof stranded by itself and if I pulled the recliner in, that would block the fireplace. It is great to hear everyone's ideas though.

Ah, I see the dilemma there. Can you lose the loveseat altogether and not replace it?

Yes, I definitely want to replace it with a chair. There is not much room between the hubby's recliner and the loveseat, so I was thinking a nice chair would work. Funny, that couch is in fantastic shape. The loveseat got licked to death by an old dog of mine, and the leather is all cracked and nasty. Plus I'm sick of looking at this set! The couch can go in the basement! :)

My husband wants to keep the couch there, no idea why, as he never sits in anything except his recliner! Ha

If I put one panel on the outsides of each window, should I put the rod up above the transom part, up by the ceiling? There wouldn't be a panel on the side closest to the fireplace, would that look weird? I plan to get the furniture issue sorted out first, but I am liking the idea of ditching the cornices.

Here's what I did in the dining room window.

I like the idea of going between the window and transom so the transom stands out. I think it's a matter of personal choice though. It makes your ceilings and windows look taller if you go all the way to the top. Here's a picture of panels on one side only. What do you think? I've seen it done many times by others on this site. Just be sure to extend the rod out far enough so the leading edge of the panel just covers the window frame and not too much of the window itself.

Since the carpet color is a medium value, I'd go very light on the upholstery.

It will be fine to have a drapery panel on the outside edges of the windows only as in Kat's example above. I would absolutely take them above the transom to the top of the window.

Hi.. You could change your furniture if you would like, but somehow the brown looks nice the color of the walls. What you could do is add color to your rooms with wall artwork and match it up with light lamps or mirrors:

I would go with an off white for the sofa, bright red or a blue, to me a green would be too earthy like too much brown. IF you are worried about the light color for the sofa, go to your nearest Ikea, I know that is a scary thought for some, but their Ektorp Sofa and loveseat, has machine washable covers, if you are worried about the look of the red, you can always return the cover. The Ikea Ektorp looks similar to Rolled arm slip covered sofas from other stores, just a bit cheaper since there is some assembly required, but for the price difference, you can have several covers, in different colors for when you change your mind on colors, or have the good fresh clean white cover for when company is over so you can act like your home is always immaculate. After sitting on a friends 20year old Ektorp sofa, I bought an Ektorp love seat for my new apartment since I was downsizing, and it is very comfortable and too short for overnight house guests, and since my cat never claws furniture, I have only had to switch my covers once in 5 years for an unplanned reason when he caused me to spill something by jumping up on my lap at the perfect time, normally I wash them like once every 6 months just to keep them fresh.
