Dormers/skylight removal

Hi, I would like to add dormers on the front of this house. We live in an area that has rough winters so these existing skylights are an ongoing problem. I'm posting two conceptual sketchs, however I'm not sure they look quite right. Any design advice would be greatly appreciated.

Proportionally, both designs have the dormers to large, visually heavy.

The second design works better with the wing on the left side, with the roof adjustment to a gable. No stone please, it's visually heavy, has nothing supporting it. Use stone as a wainscot to establish a nice base for the home, not hanging in the air.

The dormer on the main wing, on the right, is much to large and overwhelming the facade.

If you used a smaller gable in each location, you could match the roof pitch of the entry porch, which would have a more unifying effect.

Btw, your spending a lot of money doing this. Why not replace the skylights with the best on the market? What kind of problems are you having in the winter?
