Yes, too long and too tall. It dwarfs the sofa which looks very petite.

You'll need to be careful with the more permanent chairs so they don't overwhelm the sofa.

Coffee table ideas

Thanks. The sofa is about 80" wide but the table is 63". I'm trying to stick to Danish modern (all the pieces above are 1960s Danish) -- what do you think about this coffee table? (42" wide, about 0.5" shorter than sofa seat)

I don't know what I'm going to do with that big coffee table unfortunately...I'll get hammered on charges if I try to return it and it will look weird if I have it to the side like in that one picture.

Can you put it behind the sofa. I know that you want to showcase it, but it does not appear that there are many choices.

Just what I was going to say. Shorten the legs about 4 or 5 inches. The first table looks better than the second.

I'd suggest you purchase a lower coffee table. I actually don't mind the length of the table but maybe if you mitered the legs a couple of inches it'll work. Looks super Mad Men, I love it!

It's a circular table, I just have the leaf in for now, trying to see what's a better permanent fit.

Val's point is interesting! My new coffee table is a lift-top (storage on the other side, not Scandinavian in any sense).

Aaron, I think -- since we are not in Denmark! -- that the use of the tall table as a "server" in your dining room is genius! But as this is an old thread, you have probably made your decision long ago.

And you obviously like the mid-tone woods, how inappropriate for someone to inject a sales pitch that wasn't asked for, into a stone-cold, year-plus old thread!

Thanks Val and Leeza, I definitely found most of the Scandinavian "coffee" tables are actually "cocktail" (or "living room") tables -- interesting to hear this is still the norm there! I agree they're also designed with a utilitarian sense in mind -- for example the table above has a sliding tray underneath that I use a lot when I'm sitting in my lounge chair now.

I ended up moving this table off to the side in the dining area and buying a smaller rosewood 1960s table so the sofa wasn't covered as much. I've attached a more recent picture (still haven't hung all my paintings haha):

Be sure to center the pictures 5' above the floor. Looks like that one is a bit too high.

As far as pictures, 5' or 57" to the mid-point is supposedly the art gallery/museum standard. You are free to hang where you want. A few years ago some were pushing the "hang them lower if people will be seated when looking at them" idea and it was VERY odd. My SIL had large pictures suspended a few inches above the back of the sofa with acres of blank wall above them!

In my just-previous house, the picture wall was the slanted wall of a tall cathedral ceiling room. I hung two framed photo-posters with their centers also being diagonal to match the ceiling! (Later replaced with antique map pictures.)

So if in doubt, you can measure 60" up but if you *like* them higher for any reason (maybe you are tall! maybe there is something else adjoining you want to balance...) -- rules are to guide, but not to be enslaved to.

Leeza, Yes, that's an Eames chair from about the 1956 production run -- older Brazilian rosewood species had the darker color seen here. Glad you think it fits! Me too. And the white shag rug "really ties the room together".

My print hanging on the right (de Kooning's Pink Angels, one of my favorites) is about 40in from the ceiling on the top and 45in from the floor on the bottom -- fairly centered, and looks about right relative to the window as well I think. Always happy to hear from people far more trained than myself. Munch's Madonna sitting there in the back left is what I plan to put high in the center on that wall -- overhang on that side gives me less room above but I think it should fit nicely whenever I get around to putting it up! Clearly, I'm a single man who has gotten away too long with this sitting on the floor haha. Cheers.

At one early point I thought current (still NEW) living room would have an "Oslo" chair and hassock for a guest's chair, but things changed from there, 2-3 times!
