They could be black soldier fly larvae. They're common in compost piles that aren't super hot. The flies aren't unattractive. The maggots are...impressive. :)

Probably Black Soldier Fly larva. Their presence can indicate the compost pile is too wet since they need a pretty moist environment to live and grow in. The adult Black Soldier Fly lives for about 30 days and does nothing but mate and lay eggs to produce more of the larva, although both do supply a food source for some predators. These are generally of little or no real value although they are used to help reduce manure piles.

The environment these larva need to live in can turn a compost pile anaerobic.

You're impossible, kimmq. Most of us know that soldier fly larvae are beneficial in a healthy compost pile. Overly wet conditions are not a favored environment at all.

If your compost piles or bins are anaerobic and soupy, the problem lies with you, not BSF larvae.

That's what my BSF larvae look like. They're not a pest. Right now my compost is dry and it still has them in it, so it has nothing to do with wetness. They eat decaying stuff and your compost pile is a pile of decay so they're pleased to live there. They do excrete a liquid and as long as your compost pile is on the ground or in a draining container, you won't have issues. I like to turn mine regularly but that me.
