They are very carefully wrapped with several layers of protection, insulation and a heat pack can be added as well.

I got discouraged - I got some heat packs last year - and I sent my last shipment to PA 3 times. First - it didn't start and plants froze. Second - it started with the vengeance - and plants got cooked. Third time - the weather shortly smiled at us - and the shipment went through just right. Without a heat pack.

I prefer not to use heat packs since I think they can do more damage than good. The boxes are usually indoors except when they are out for delivery in the postal trucks. If they are not left out in the cold, they should be okay.

Yes - that's exactly what I think about heat packs. What worries me more - people order plants and expect them to arrive in a decent condition - while it is already 10F outside in their area. Even the heat packs won't help...Linda Rowe double boxes everything - box with plants, heat pack, oodles of fiberglass insulation, big box. You can overwinter in her box.
