Ideas for Rugs

I just got a natural fiber rug from CL. It is huge and I am glad I found it!

I am planning on putting another on top that is 5X8. Right now the current little rug is just there so I can see how it lays etc. The CL rug is about 10'X13'

Please ignore the fact I do not yet have colorful pillows or the right scale of coffee table. I will be working on that soon enough. Also, the lighting is off due to the sun coming in through the windows.

So, this is the room and the rug I am considering buying. What are your thoughts?

I really like the blue rug, although dark I am sure with all your windows you get enough light.

I am not a fan of rug layering, I dont understand it, why not just get the right size patterned rug and forget the CL rug.

I think your red and blue area rugs are pretty but being 5 x 8, when placed under coffee table, you won't see them or their detail, so what's the point in using/layering? Also, are you trying to cover regular carpet by using the 10 x 13? why can't new CL rug be enough?

I love layering rugs. I think it adds texture and interest. I really just want the CL rug to be a base for the rug I choose. I might need to go with a larger area rug than 5X8.

btw, no the floor is wood.

Love the CL rug, did you get a good deal? I can't ever find anything decent locally.

Rose, layering rugs add another element of texture and interest. It also lends heft to a beautiful rug that may not be quite big enough for the area.

The rug you're considering will look great in your home. It's significantly smaller than the CL rug, will you place it under the coffee table?

On a side note, can you tell me what and where you purchased your wood floor? I'm making notes for our next house. Thanks!

Edit: I was posting at the same time as you Akt! Looks like we're on the same page!

I adore rug layering and have it myself. Perhaps something larger than 5x8 that would not get hidden under coffee table will work.

Thanks Mag! I was planning on placing it under the coffee table. Perhaps I should get a larger rug? That rug comes in 5X8 and 9X12. So, that stinks!

I got the floors from cheaperfloors.com and they are cabana brown by royal Oak. They are very sensitive to everything so make sure you really love them! They have a UV oil cured finish and it is very testy and not easy to live with.

So, if I went with the 9'x12' I would likely be covering nearly the entire CL rug. Hmmm

    how about something like this

Similar to the pic above...the only way it will work IMO is if the top rug is a fairly flat weave, and is not much smaller than the larger rug. I think 8x10 would be about right.

I guess if I went with a 9'X12' it might look something like those photos.

I like the layered rug look but agree that 5x8 looks to small to achieve the look you are after can you get the rug in a at least an 8x10? Lovely home!

This may sound crazy but what if I put the rug in front of the coffee table and not under. Something like this but my rug would be a bit larger.

Just realized that they have a 7'X10'! That might be just what I need.

if your fiber rug is 10 x 13 and you get something in a 9x12, that would expose the fiber rug by 1 ft evenly on all sides, which is nice. I don't think a flat weave is de rigour as a top layer, even something very fluffy would be nice, as long as it doesn't look like a bath rug. But any texture diff. than the natural fiber rug will make a nice statement

I like the blue rug, and think the size could work if it were placed diagonally on the larger one. Placing the top rug diagonally makes the layering look better and more intentional, IMO. Layering one on top of the other as aligned rectangles (like the pictures posted just above) looks like the person just couldn't make up his or her mind which one to use.

Bossy, if I did go with a 9'X12' that would only leave 6" on each side. I feel that would be too large. I think I am going to go with the 7x10. I just measured and it should work close to perfectly!

@kswl, I hadn't considered the too uniform aspect but its interesting that you note it as in my layering, my rugs lay diagonally but I don't think the pics posted are bad, perhaps too safe?

@AK, youre right. I can't add worth a darn! for top, that would be a little too big to achieve nice layering effect

So, today is the last day for 50% off and I think I am going to get the 7'X10'. Any last thoughts? By the way, the blue rug has white fringe. The fiber rug also has fringe. Not sure if that will matter. I can always trim the fringe and tea stain it so it isn't so white.

Everything was 50% off and if you bought a second rug then both were 10% off as well! Had to do it. ;)

love the colors in the runner above. looking forward to seeing your living room after your new 'top rug' arrives

    Thanks Lisa!

I love that runner, Aktillery! Can you provide a link? I'm looking for something to put on our library stairs, and at 50% off I wouldn't mind having installers cut and upholster it on the stairs.

Yes, bossy, I think "too safe" is what I'm thinking.

Oh, yes, Aktillery, please provide a link or name of the concern doing business with. My daughter needs a nice long runner in the colors of the one you posted. TIA.

aktillery - I bought 7 rugs from esalerugs last month. Great to work with but once you are on their email list the 50% of never stops. So buy away!! Super easy returns they pay for shipping and CS was so courteous I was amazed.

Great rug BTW . Just LOVE your house!

    Haha! Good to know!!!

Aktillery, Bonnie_Ann linked to this thread from the one I posted.

I'm rug shopping and a couple people mentioned your rugs. I see you purchased from Esale. I found a couple polypropylene rugs on their site that I like, but wondered about the look and feel. Are you still happy with your purchases?
