Help with a Garage layout?

I posted this on the Remodeling forum but thought I might get some specific information if I posted it here too. We are building a new garage and would need the extra space for storage of a lot of gardening supplies, tools, a garden workspace with a bench and a workspace for woodworking. We also need to figure out the best placement of windows and where one entry door from the main house should go, The outer dimensions of the garage will be 29 x 17ft for a one car garage. It will be longer than wider. I thought this was a lot of space, but now that I'm trying to figure out where I'm going to put a lot of our stuff and still have room for two workbenches and the cars….lol….it's looking a little small.

Since I would like a garden workspace, I'd like a utility sink there, but the garage won't be heated and I worry about bursting pipes.

Any input you could give would be great…thanks.

You could provide water to a utility sink via a frostproof sillcock that extends over the sink from a wall which is common with a living space. You could also run an underground line to a hydrant that hangs over the sink. Or, if you have a basement, run supply water from there, and don't forget to winterize (drain those lines) before danger of freezing. This is all predicated on the sink being properly drained and vented.

I'd start with one workbench along the north wall and one along the west, and rearrange later according to what works best. I'd also put shelves along the south wall and/or a way to hang various tools. When I'm doing any real work, the car is in the driveway.

Thanks Randy, my only problem is the only wall it shares with a living space is where we need to park the car. [g] If you look at the drawing, see where the 'entry to the main house' is? The only wall the garage shares, is that 8ft wide wall between the house and the garage on the South wall. I wonder could I have the sink next to the wall and route the pipe along the inside of the wall and then inside the shared wall? There is plumbing above that 8ft wall that could come down fairly easily. I'd not want to install a sink any closer to the front then 18ft to give the car enough room to park. So 18ft from the garage door on the Southern wall of the garage.

I was thinking the North and West walls too. I thought the extension ladder could go on the South wall, but I might need to use a smaller garage door to give enough room next to the car? That's a 9ft garage door.

As an alternative, I was thinking about where all the garden paraphernalia is going to go. The wheel barrel, 5 gallon buckets, a riding seat, the lawnmower, milk crates. We also have to put one large Rubbish and one large Recycle barrels somewhere. Next to the door seems logical. So if the rubbish is going there, then maybe I could use that entire North wall area for garden storage and tools and put a workbench on the West wall and one on the South wall.

I wonder how much room I need for the car? I will have to measure it.

Thanks for that info on the sink.
