I grow 5 different agaves in my cactus garden. Agave harvardiana, A. parryi, A neomexicana, A. parryi huachettuana, A. leuquilla. Some have been in the ground for 20 years. From time to time I will lose one to a cold, wet winter but for the most part they love it here. Some of my A. harvardiana have bloomed and really gotten a lot of local attention. I even have some seedlings from the seeds when they bloomed. I don't have any idea what a devils claw is but I see lots of sellers trying to convince us that more agaves are hardy. Most other then I grow are not. Paul

Paul, thanks I may try one that you have had success with. Are yours in a protected area? My space is on a slight incline out in the open, they will get a full day of sun. Soil is amended clay but I can add gravel for better drainage if needed.

next time I am at Home Depot I will get the name off of the tag. I doubt if it's hardy here.

I grow all mine in full, total sun. Drainage is the most important issue. Clay not good. It will need a lot of gravel. Paul

I grow the same kind as cactuspaul here in OKC. A. havardiana is the largest cold hardy agave you can grow in Oklahoma. I quit messing with any cactus, agave, succulents or yucca that are not cold hardy, its just not worth it. Sooner or later it'll get killed and there are too many hardy choices available. When I first started out I used to run outside in winter to cover stuff that was good only to lows in the 20's. That is for the birds.

A. parryi spreads around a lot, you'll get many babies come up around the original plant.

My soil is amended with coarse sand. I live on a slope so there is no standing water, good runoff.

Try this website. Kelly Grummons sells lots of cold hardy desert plants. He's great to order from. People trade on GW too, you might check it out.

There is an annual cactus sale at Will Rogers Park in OKC, usually around the end of May or first of June. You can pick up all kinds of cold hardy outdoor types there.

Thanks,texasranger2. I am determined to start a cactus garden. I will start out small just to get my feet wet. I had a very large tree type cactus, before the tornado, it was about 5' tall and wide. In the late spring it was covered in the most beautiful magenta flowers. It made you stop and go WOW. I saw that K&K had some in gallon pots but I will wait til spring to purchase. I know it is cold hardy had it for years.
