Cardinal Climber -- how long after planting does it bloom?

I planted Cardinal Climber seeds pretty late, in mid-June. But the two plants seem to be fine, each growing up on a wooden trellis behind them. The leaves have mostly covered the trellis (see photo of one below). I'm wondering: how much leaf does there need to be before the flowers decide to appear?

I'm also in 6B near philadelphia and mine still haven't bloomed. I see some small buds forming but not too many either. I never fertilized. Maybe that was my mistake.

Hi Kimpa – I see buds on my two Cardinal Climber plants as well. I did use a little flower fertilizer a week ago. I'm crossing my fingers. They are such beautiful plants.

Cardinal climber has a really long time to bloom. I decided that it wasn't worth the growing room this far north since the bloom season before frost was so short. Perhaps next year try starting seeds in pots 2 weeks before your last frost date and plant transplants.

It is so weird that I found one bloom the next day after I posted too! Yes starting them earlier is a good idea. I'm hoping for a late frost this year ( and every year!).

I'm in the AFF = Oct. 21-31 zone, but since this has been such a great year of gardening for me and I therefore do NOT want it to end, I have never before wanted a late frost so badly. :-)
