Economical Worm Bin

I already have the buckets (tidy cat litter pails). I have been thinking about doing this for years. Now that I have a garden (which was also put off for years). I want to start a worm bin. Worms are expensive. I was thinking, What if I get some worms from a bait shop. I don't know how many is in a cup? A Dozen? How long would it take them to reproduce to be around a pound? I just spend a lot building the raised bed. I need to keep this cheap. I am also a beginner. I don't want to buy a pound of worms just to kill them. If I kill a cup of bait worms, I don't lose much. And I can try again. I don't know how people survive in this economy. Everything is getting expensive. I greatly appreciate any input :)
