Are there roots growing around in a circle in the bottom of the pot? A picture will help.

a lot of times I can do this with plants that have dried out and the soil just stays together because it's good soil but the roots aren't root bound.

when I repot, I remove old soil and use the same size pot, but refresh the substrate so it is nutrient dense again.

wet soil, smallish 18yr or so old plant whoose roots had basically made a mold of the inside of the pot. norma is now in a new pot and seems happy

She's come a long way, when I got her almost 3 years ago she had one living leaf and I had to remove 80% of the roots

Have you thought about trellising (yes, phone, some people trellis as a verb!) or using bamboo hoops with bee clips?

Now that she's in a larger pot I am considering trellisING yes
