Aphids do not produce a noticeable odor and the simplest, easiest method of control for them is a sharp water spray. No need for garlic soapy water. The Baking Soda and Oil mix is for Powdery Mildew not insects. Perhaps this article may be of some help.

I wouldn't use cooking oil on plants, either. Invest in a horticultural oil.

But first and foremost, have the insect or disease identified before you apply anything. That's extremely important advice.

As a general rule, I use plain water sprays, Neem oil, horticultural oils, hand removal, and 'Surround', a kaolin clay spray. I have an insecticidal soap on hand and use it rarely. Oh, we have to use Amdro fire ant bait, as well as an organic bait for fire ants in the veggie garden.
