I use ADOBE PHOTOSHOP 5.0 - there are a lot of newer and more complicated versions if you want. It's super easy to download and use. Put disc in, and follow instructions. It takes no time. To have spent 30 minutes coloring meticulously the picture above - it would have been cleaner. I only spent 10 minutes. It shows! But at least one can get the jest of changing colors.

You can match any color on a chosen picture you want, lets say in a rug, and then paint it on the walls on the same picture or on another. It's a fun program.

The lamp shade: I googled sage colored fabric, picked the polka dot one, opened it in ADOBE, cropped it and stuck it in the picture.

Well, before I repainted the cabinets I would see if there was something that could be done in the faux world with glaze to just tone them down a bit. But what's making the white look worse is the black appliances. I would get stainless appliances. I'm also not a fan of that yellow wall color paint, so I would paint the walls something more neutral. And I would replace those cabinets knobs with a combination of larger knobs and pulls in stainless/silver. I would also decorate the countertops and the cabinet tops.

I am also a great fan of Sherwin Williams. Before repainting everything, have you considered adding a light color on the island first? You can warm up the cabinet color later if you still need to.

wow! so much advice...i confess i haven't read them all...but to be honest, i'd seriously consider repainting the walls first. the golden under-tone in the wall color is just making the white seem overly bright. also, the ceiling should be a matte finish white, not a glossy finish, so the sheen on the ceiling is also competing with the cabinets. now, if the cabinets and trim are the same, you can easily make what you have work. i'd sample some alternate neutrals to see if the effect changes...look to the granite for inspiration...a creamy gray based greige might be better here. i'd also switch the 2 pot lights over the island to pendants, and change the cabinetry handles to either vintage looking oil rubbed bronze bin pulls or to something with more presence. the little pulls that are there currently, just don't have any impact. there is lots of potential in here!! :)

I think your kitchen looks great! I'd agree the cabinets may be too "stark white" but could easily be adjusted pulling a warmer hue out of the island countertop. Still a fan of the black and white concept, though!

Your eyes are just not adjusted to the stark difference of the new white color, and you are being tricked by the difference from white cabinets to black appliances. Take the plant down from up there & give yourself time to adjust. Your kitchen is lovely. If anything should be changed , do the walls first.

I do not think the cabinets are too white either. I just think too many other things are too dark. The walls are probably too dark, and while the dark appliances have to stay, is it possible for you to get a lighter kitchen set, maybe paint that? I think you're on your way to a brightened up, lovely kitchen.

I agree that the black appliances, island and table are too stark. If this were my kitchen I would change that, and the backsplash too.

Ecle- I found the rug(s) at Target.

Paint the island a medium gray, get some chair pads with a print that has lots of white, get some big green plants in white pots for the counters, get a big centerpiece for the table. Your cabinets are pretty. I'd hold off on new appliances.

I would live with the cabinets for a while. Perhaps I should paint ur walls a different color. A shade of peach or soft mango would b my suggestion. Best wishe

Try some colorful and fun handles and knobs. If you do paint your cabinets, a greyish blue would be a nice color. I see it going well with the wall color you have. Oooh, what about some colorful pendant lighting for over that island? I don't think you have to make drastic changes to make it seem less cold.

I've read all the comments...I remodeled my honey oak kitchen last year with SW Simply White. Its pretty white and my island is dark brown espresso stain. I used SW Accessible Beige on the walls. I agree with all the wall color and appliance change opinions. If you look at your photo and see the blue room off the kitchen it looks great with your white and black cabs...so maybe change wall color first to a greige like mine or try a complimentary blue to the one in your living room? That's the least expensive change. If its still too much white then change the appliances. I also have honey oak floors and couldn't afford to change but it still works. Your kitchen is beautiful and I hate to see you go to the expense to repaint the cabs. Hope this helps!

the white cabinets are perfect and not a problem. Your dark table and chairs are a problem. try painting the walls as has been suggested.

Stay away from white especially with those yellow walls. Try a bluish grey color for the cabinets. I just saw someone else said the same color. Knobs aren't going to do it. You need a statement, see about hiring a designer for one hour. Someone who specializes in colors. Other people giving you hints of their white won't help, different light and how the light hits your walls and cabinets different times of the dy. If you go with a bluish color then you can do white walls. Also wallpaper is coming back you may want to look at doing one wall, but look for a designer first before you spend any more money.

I agree painting the walls a light neutral color would really make a difference. You could also think about replacing the hardware with something darker!

I would try antiquing them with a gel stain. Lots of advice all over the internet on how to undertake this easy DIY project if you feel the need to change cabinets. Which I think look gorgeous and brand new in the crisp white.

The white is pretty! Simply add "pops" of color with your accessories! Red, turquoise, or bright green would work! Tea kettle, tea towels, stand mixer, fresh flowers and/or centerpieces fro the table and island, and valance/roman shade for the window. If you have $$ to spend take the above -mentioned advice about swapping the black appliances for SS, and paint the walls an off white, pale gray, or light blue.

Hi Katie I notice you are from Wisconsin - so am I but I live in Nebraska now. To answer your questions, yes my cabinets were painted creamy by SW. My appliances are a frig from Sears it's a Kenmore Elite model#795..77563600. 35.75 (w) 34.25 (d) 69.75 (h). My stove is Kenmore Elite as well small oven on top and large oven/convection below a conventional looking stove. Dishwasher is also Kenmore ultra wash with quiet guard. My dining room is also off my kitchen and it is a pale gray/blue.

Also my wall color in my kitchen is Latte by SW.

How about painting only the island. Perhaps a fun color like turquoise? I'd say your white cabinets are fine---it is likely the high contrast between all the white and dark things is what is bugging you. My apologies for not reading the entire thread, as i should have done.

Yes, just go with it. Leave it the way it is and eventually you will fall in love with it just the way it is. If you are feeling color deprived do some very colorful runners and floral arrangement or centerpiece and a few other accessories but don't depart too far from monochromatic which is my very favorite decorating look. Most people cannot run out and buy all new stainless appliances and no guarantee that it would be a sure fix. I wouldn't change your paint either, in person it probably looks great with the backsplash etc. I always hate everything when I first get it and am sick at heart for having changed it and spent the money and then after awhile I do like it. There have been few times when I felt like "bam" that is just what I was looking for and wow what a difference! Things have to grow on me and maybe you are like that too?

Black and white look fabulous together! Who can resist a man in a tuxedo? Who doesn't love black and white Spectator heels? A Dalmatian? A Holstein cow? It's a classy tailored look, ever popular in clothing and cars. Flaunt your black and white with smug acceptance! One of my favorite looks is white cabinets with black granite, so formal, so elegant, so tuxedo-ish.

I think your kitchen looks really lovely. The thing that jumps out at me is the height of the cabinet above the wall oven. It looks too high compared to the other overheads. Is that normal?

CHANGE THE WALL COLOR BEFORE YOU CHANGE THE CABINETS! Painting out the walls is cheaper than changing the cabinets. Pick some colors, paint up some sample boards (as big as you can make them) and put them up next to the cabinets. A soft, foggy blue gray will soften the white. Behr Light French Grey, SW. Silver Tradition, would both work well. If, after living with the cabinets for 6 months, you still hate the color, then go ahead and change it. Our kitchen is very stark, but I love that, so we've added bright colors in bowls and containers, and wall art. That really helps warm it up.

Well the stainless Steal appliances came and I think the kitchen looks a TON better.

I am going paint the walls a mocha color, then paint the island Benjamin Moore White Dove OC-17 in semi gloss ( painter originally used Satin Finish in all cabinets- yuck) . If the White Dove looks good then Ill repainted the rest of the cabinets the same color.

I feel so much better about my kitchen. I really appreciated everyone's input throughout this process. The kitchen is still not complete but I'm making headway.

If I feel that the BM OC-17 that is the right white, then I'll move into the other cabinets......Still a work in progress but I'm making headway. I appreciate your feedback!

If you haven't painted the new white shade on the island, might you consider a midnight blue on it? You might like your current white cabinet color if there is just one less bit of it. Your Italian poster seemed to reflect a dark blue, which gave me the blue idea.

Your kitchen is beautiful. Yes the stainless looks very nice. I should not repaint the island to another white shade as I think then you are just adding more white. I do understand that once you repaint the island and you like that white better you will repaint all cabinets however I think the island needs to be darker colour to ground the room. Would you be willing to tell us what it cost to have the kitchen professionally painted.

I would paint the island a lighter contrasting color and leave your cabinets alone. That would be a huge waste of money just to change your white shade when there are so many other things that can be done for a lot less money.

Lighten your wall color, but keep it warm. Lighten your island color but keep it warm. With your appliance change, you are good to go.

Try a light taupe for the walls...You'll like the rich soothing feel of the kitchen especially as a backdrop for the bright new stainless appliances and will play off the backsplash nicely. Looks great.

What did you decide? Can you post "after" pictures?!

I think the after photos definitely look better than the before photos. Good job! Could others comment on this - I think the after looks better because now the backsplash undertone relates to the walls. If the homeowner and changed out the backsplash to match the before photo wall color, that could have worked too.
