Never seal a wood counter it defeats the whole purpose of the ease of care with one and tung oil is not food friendly inless it is PURE tung oil which is hard to get.

just to clarify you would not recommend any finish for a wood counter top

Search for an ideabook called "wonderful wood countertops for kitchen and bath." Lots of good info. I have it bookmarked, but can't figure out how to copy the link on my iPad. I put a wood counter in my laundry room/mudroom. It is Walnut, sealed with 6 coats of Waterlox. It is a matte finish...not shiny, but brings out the beauty of the wood. For food surfaces, The article says mineral oil, or if other finish is used, opt for cutting board and not chop right on the surface. Good luck. Wood is gorgeous!

We have wood countertops (2yrs old and no problems yet) we finished them with mineral oil followed by OSMO. German, non toxic, matte finish.

I have had wood counters in my last 2 houses and I have never sealed them and I use them they are not just a pretty faceWood has an enzme that actually kills bacteria so if you seal it there is no way that enzyme can work.I find them so easy to use and care for when they start looking a little tired a fine light sanding and a re-oil and they look like new.Use yours enjoy it’s beauty and it will reward you with years of use and it never goes out of style.I ran a small catering business out of the kitchen in this pic for yrs.
