Need help with my island width.

We are planning a large island with a 12 inch overhang for eating on one long side and an induction cooktop, which will take up about 23 inches of the width of the island, on the other long side. We were planning to make the island 45" by 7' 9" but found that the quartz countertop is much cheaper at 42". Not much of a change, but I feel that this puts the eating area too close to cooking area. Anybody have any experience with cooktops on the same level as eating area? Are bigger islands more useful or bigger obstacles to work around? Thanks for any help you can give me.
