Cattleyas Rotting

Hello everyone -- many of the new growths on my Laelias and Cattleyas this year are developing rot and falling off before maturing. If I don't remove all the infected tissue, it then spreads to the whole plant and kills it. I've lost several plants already. Any idea what causes this and any tips on controlling it? I'm in the Gulf Coast.

Do not know the name of the organism but it is waiting to pounce when watering, humidity, air movement or shading are not optimum for cattleyas

I just call it the dreaded black rot. That is when the sheaths around new growths go black rather than gradually drying out.

Tell us more about where you have the plants. The potting mix and so on.
