last i looked mine was 10 feet tall... and about 3 wide ... sounds like your spot is too close to the house ... i would never plant a tree.. under an eave ...

size estimates on conifers.. are at 10 years.. presume at 20.. it will be twice as big ...

Any shrub you plant as a "foundation" shrub should be at least 4 feet from the foundation. Overhangs then become irrelevant.

my usual cliche.. that i didnt have time for yesterday ...:

plants are planted to hide the foundation ... NOT ON THE FOUNDATION...

you need to leave space at the house.. for painting.. gutter cleaning.. xmas light hanging ... window washing etc ...

Thanks for the good input, everyone! I'll try to keep the tree as far away from the foundation as possible.

I love this plant and as Ken notes, it gets bigger than one might think. It has great color and texture and I like to use it massed in groups. I clip the leader out when it is about 3' tall and that makes for a bushier, slightly more rounded plant. I generally don't clip it twice. It definitely greens out in shade - I recently moved two that were getting shaded out. Have fun with it.

Agree with many of the above comments, but would add that a well-grown plant that is not terribly root bound can be planted at any time that the soil is not frozen or likely to be frozen in a very short time. It takes a lengthy period of extremely cold temperature to freeze the soil.

Please listen to the location advice of these good people. If you've planned on a narrow little planting strip along the foundation of your home, you need to widen it. It's not good for the plants nor the foundation.

OK, I planted it over the weekend. As it turns out, the plant is only about 1-ft inside the overhang, so I'm thinking since it faces west, the rains should be able to get to it fairly easily. Also, how often should I water this thing until the first frost hits? A few times a week?
