Ceiling dilemma

This living area is from the Shea Homes Alpine plan. We are considering this plan as a starting point for a custom build. I think I love the "open but not totally open" design of the kitchen/morning/living room. The only thing that bugs me a little when I look at this room is the ceiling...does it seem unfinished, like something is missing, or it is from the 80s? I can't put my finger on it, but something seems off. If you feel the same way, what do you think might make it better? Could you put some kind of wood ceiling in or would that be weird? I know this is very vague but maybe someone will understand...haha

I think this is a scale issue. I do see what you are talking about. The moulding detail on the side walls is quite beautiful and ornate. However coupled with the heaviness of the slant in the roof and the deep inset windows they look off balance. Raising the moulding will not help as it is to fine a detail. If there a way they can get rid of this angle detail and flatten the ceiling then add coffers? Keep the wonderful hight and windows as is. This should not affect the exterior elevation. The recessed lighting can be modified:)

That makes sense - those are just dormers so don't think they serve any purpose other than to bring in light. Thanks!!

Why not just paint the ceiling the same color as the walls?
