You can read as much as you want but ultimately to have to learn by experience. It is somewhat like swimming ; You cannot learn how to swim unless too jump in , struggle and drink some of that water. hehe

Best tip would be to read everything in the "growing tomatoes" forum. Copy and paste notes as needed into a document where you can organize the information and quickly find it later on.

There are so many variables regarding growing tomatoes successfully that it would be difficult to create a short list of tips that would apply to everyone. Take what you learn here and if it makes sense, apply it to your own growing experience, and then learn from your own successes and failures what works and what doesn't.

This is a great place to assemble a list of varieties to try growing as you will find several that get positive reviews and mentions from forum contributors. This may be a better approach than just picking varieties at random.

When transplanting, bury stem up to or over the bottom leaves. This makes for a stronger stem and more productive plant.

For me, one DOCUMENT is not enough.

What are your Top 5/10 advice for a newbie ?

Compost, if you don't have a pile yet then by some but get the pile started.Keep it real simple, just a pile in the corner of your garden; green layer-grass clippings, brown leaves or straw, keep damp not wet and let it rot.Every 3-4 weeks mix it up and keep it damp. You can buy $100.00s of dollars of STUFF but nothing replaces compost.
