water level in pond

I have a pond with a waterfall that was already here when I bought the house. Ponds are new to me. It seemed though that the water level in the pond was dropping too fast. I think it is where the water intake for where the pump sends the water to the water fall, it seems that intake is set too low. We blocked it a bit with pond stones etc and the pond is at a more acceptable level. However it seems as if the pump is needing more water. Is there an over flow valve or something that we could be losing water from? When I leave the pond level where it seems to naturally go the pond is more like a glamorized puddle which I dont like. I would appreciate any comments.
