Pumpkins All Died Except Two

I planted 10 Burpee Pumpkin Jack-O-Lantern plants and most got vine borers and died even though I dug all the vine borers out. (I know, too late). 2 stray plants that wound up growing in spots that I planted other veggies like tomatoes grew up the fence and are still alive. One even has a tiny pumpkin starting to form. I can't figure out why these 2 stray plants lived and are thriving. Is it because they found a path up the fence and aren't lying in the dirt?
