    from 4 inches

Ken- you need to update your GG photos. I personally would like to see them, now. That first photo is ingrained in my mind because of your Juniper 'Gold Cone'... which I understand is gone now!

    Cheers,

Thanks for the post plantkiller. I was away camping this weekend. Thanks for posting the pictures. I do have two questions for you guys. Im guessing that that is a Cupressus nootkatensis on the right side and i was wondering if the weeping ones that all the online nursery's sell if they are cultivations to where they were grafted or lf it is a guess a sub spieces like picea abies pendulum major is to picea abies. I am having a hard time finding the straight species. I was also wondering if they would do well in Missouri. The weeping ones do grow well here but im not sure about the regular ones.

No, they're cultivated and most are grafted but some are rooted. I'm going to guess that Frank's is the cultivar 'Green Arrow'.

What you need to know regarding cultivated Nootka cypress is that the ones grafted on the west coast are put on the roots of Platycladus orientalis which does HORRIBLE in the mid-west. The grafted nootka's that do extremely well for us are grafted on Juniper and the Juniper root-system used is Juniperus chinensis 'Hetzii' aka 'Hetzii Columnaris' aka 'Fairview'. These junipers are rooted cuttings from that cultivar which is best known as 'Hetzii' and then used to graft any Nootka cypress on. So, when you are ordering a Noota cypress, you need to find out whether it's grafted onto Juniper or if it's on its own roots. Those two combinations are good for you in MI or me in IL or +oM in WI or anybody in the mid-west. If your plant is grafted on Platycladus..... 9 out of 10 will die in our climate. And the same applies to the entire east coast. Any nootka on Platycladus is worthless anywhere except when grown on the west coast.

I visited the VA Arboretum yesterday, took my camera, but for some reason didn't take a picture of the T. plicata 'atrovirens.' For some areas, including here, I think this is the most beautiful Thuja one can grow. It is not "THAT" different from the Green Giants, but I think it is more graceful. It is not weeping, but there is just a bit of "droop" to the foliage that makes it "softer" or something.

The T. Plicata 'atrovirens' may not grow quite as fast as the Green Giants, but it grows moderately fast. Well, next time I'm there, I will take a picture and post it. Mine are coming along nicely. After 4 years, planted at 30", they are about 9 feet tall now, but still too small to show their real beauty.

Some good GG pics being posted here, so I'll add.

Below are 11-yr olds. I'd guess 24' for the tallest?

They impress me because they defy the heat/dryness and keep growing.

deltaohioz5, really like your pic of the pond-shore planting. All impressive,

but my favorite is the semi-weeping spruce beside the Nootka. What is it?

    Hi Spruceman!

I'm a event producer in Montreal and this year is going to be the 375th anniversary of the City. We are looking for a Huge Christmas tree to setup in downtown Montreal for the occasion. A Norway Spruce that would be about 90 feet tall. While doing some research on the Internet I found that you would have this kind of tree on your land. Is it still the case?

If you do so, could you call me to talk about it?

    Thanks!
