HOW TO PRIVATE
MESSAGE OTHERS ON THE “NEW” GARDENWEB!

Everyone will need to PM their email
address to Flowerridge so she can send her address and directions to her
house—which is usually done about a week
before the swap, so if anyone isn't sure how to enable Private Messaging on the houzz site, here's what you do!

HERE’S HOW YOU ENABLE
IT SO OTHERS CAN PM YOU!

Sign in and click on “Your Houzz”

On your “profile page” click on “Edit Profile”

On that page click on “Advanced Settings”

On the Advanced Settings page go to the bottom where it says
“Privacy settings”

Click on the box just below “Who can message me” and in the
drop-down menu click on “Allow anyone to message me”

That will enable other members to contact YOU! You will
NOT receive their message directly! What
you’ll receive at your email address is an email from Houzz that says you have
a message in your “Inbox.” Then you can
either click on the link in the email to go to the Inbox, or you can go to your
“Your Houzz” page and click on “Messages” right under your “banner.”

HOW TO PM THE HOSTESS/HOST OF THE SWAP!

When you’re signed in,
all you need to do is go to the bio page of the person you want to contact and
click on the “Message” box which is right next to the “Follow” box up on the
right side of the “banner.” If the person has PMing enabled the message box should be
there!

THIS IS IMPORTANT!

When you PM flowerridge, you MUST put your email
address in THE BODY of the email!
Just PMing somebody will NOT give them your address unless you
intentionally put it in the message.

If you’re having any trouble trying to find the right thing
to “change” in your settings to enable PMing, go to this link, and then scroll

The way we've handled the "addresses" in the past is to just have each person who plans to come to the "current" swap private message their address directly to the "current host." I'm not sure how much help it would be to get the list from the spring swap (gjmancini--I haven't seen her around here lately) since there's no telling how she decided to "identify" the people with the addresses, and since almost everyone has a different screen name and "real" name, it could be pretty confusing to someone who didn't make up the list. I checked, and there are also several people coming this time who didn't come to the spring swap, so you'd need to get those addresses directly anyway. I believe it will be easiest for you, as soon as you get PMing enabled, if you just post a BIG note (maybe on all the threads) for people to send you their addresses as soon as possible, and be sure to mention that they need to put their email address IN THE BODY OF THEIR MESSAGE TO YOU. I really do think that will be the quickest way for you to get the names/addresses, rather than trying to sort them out of a list that has a lot of addresses you don't need for this swap.

When I've had swaps at my house, after I've gotten most of the addresses, I'd post (BIG!) the names of those people who hadn't contacted me yet, and when it was time to send out my address/directions, if they hadn't sent their address to me, they didn't get the email from me! There are always a couple people who see the thread and post that they want to come, and then never come back to post again!

If you have any questions, come post them here! As soon as you enable PMing, I'll send you my address.

FALL SWAP 2015 - Plan to arrive around 11:30, Saturday October 3rd

A few details - Parking is only on one side of my street, so don't hesitate to pull over in front of our driveway to off load and then go park. I will have a wheelbarrow, a red wagon and one other cart for folks to use to get plants to the back yard, if you need it. The food we'll have to carry because the carts are just too dirty.

Please access the backyard from the big gate beside the garage. It will be a lot easier than through the house. There will be a sign in sheet straight ahead by the shed. We will have the food table up on the deck, but the beverages out by the lawn. Both eating and swapping will be on the lawn. We will be under a big Honey Locust, so everyone (including the plants we swap) should be able to stay in the shade. I have some outdoor chairs (can't guaranty they are perfectly clean, so don't wear white). If you have a favorite chair in a bag, you are welcome to bring it.

This swap is looking to be smaller than the spring swap, but still plan to be here for most of the afternoon. We will try to keep it moving, but visiting is where we all learn from each other.

The forecast is looking really good for next Saturday - 72 degrees and partly sunny. So great weather, great people, great plants - It's going to be a great EVENT!

Soooo.... looks like forecast has pulled the ol' switcharoo for Saturday. Sunny and 70 has now become rainy and 60. Everyone remember to bring a jacket... Thursday looks really nice however, if we wanted to reschedule lol.

Yeah, keeping my eye on the weather too. If it turns really nasty, it's a small enough group that we can take it inside. But, yes, jackets will be needed unless the forecast switches again.

I've been watching the weather too! The end of last week NOAA was saying it was only gonna be in the upper 50s, yesterday they were saying 65º, and today they're saying 63º, with just a 20% chance of rain! Over the last week the TV weathermen have been saying all kinds of things, including a high of 55º and up to 60% chance of rain!!! With NOAA's current info, I'M predicting it's gonna be a cool, but very nice day!

And just saw the weather on Channel 4 and by now they're saying 67º! Sounds like we may not get much sun, but like we're gonna be Good To Go for as long as the swap lasts!

I really enjoyed, and
appreciated, your sharing your knowledge on the hardy Hibiscus, Skybird - very
helpful! And thanks for your seeds, as well as several other peoples. I now have three
different varieties to look forward to! I did look mine up, and every
site says it's the same variety as yours, Skybird - moscheutos. So I
still don't know why mine seems to be sterile since it doesn't appear to
be a hybrid. Or maybe these sites just don't mention that!

I'll
be planting my bigfoot geranium and oat grass from amester (it was so
fun getting to stop by and see your great garden, too!), my mint
(forget who!) today :) And I will wintersow some of my Hibiscus and
Hollyhock seeds,
and I think I will keep my Rose of Sharon (thanks zoogrl!) in the pot
and bring it inside over winter and plant in the spring - sure hope it
grows for me!

kvenkat - my daughter really appreciate the bag of cat food you
brought and I snagged on one of my turns :) and looking forward to
trying the pineapple/orange marmalade!

It was a WONDERFUL day! Thanks Arlene and Jerry! Enjoyed the chance to talk to other garden enthusiasts--felt a bit less "crazy peony lady" taking to others as dedicated to gardening as I am! I'm getting ready to plant my acquisitions this morning, except for Skybird's which need to stay in the cups for a while longer for the roots to develop....I got mostly bareroot plants so will get all of them taken care of right away. Amester, thanks for the bigroot geranium and daylilies!

It usually stays pretty civil until Skybird guns for a peony. Then Msty and Zoogrl start arm wrestling over the hardy hibiscus seeds while Zach runs around daring people to eat his pepper jellies. Lizbest and Flowerridge team up against Gardenchloe and Gjcore in in shooting dice for first pick of the iceplant. Kvenkat and Betty are the muscle and take unruly participants out at the knees during the free-for-all. I hide under the folding table and finish off the brownies.

I know I left a few people out of my VERY FAKE narrative (gj's better half, the pretty blonde in the purple shirt, Jerry...probably someone else...what's the statute of limitations on chemo brain??) so we'll just assume they were the aforementioned 'unruly participants'.

Actually we each take a minute to talk about what we brought. Then we draw numbers and go in order, each person choosing a single 'pick'. We then switch the order for the second round. At some point a consensus between 'another round' and 'free-for-all' is made. During 'free-for-all' people walk around, quietly peering and asking questions as they take the plants that are left. It is RIDICULOUSLY civil in the best possible way.

We sure did wind up with some pretty perfect weather! Really glad it wasn’t today! I finally gave up late this afternoon and
turned the furnace on for the first time this fall when it never got above 68º
in the house all day!

Thank you Greg/gjcore for being our Produce Department again! This time I came home with a big and a huge Yukon Gold potato and a bag full
of the Russets—there were more in there than I realized, and a couple of the
cukes—I’ve never seen such big cukes with such tiny seeds! I had part of one of them in a big salad last
nite, and I know I’m gonna love the potatoes too—probably very soon!

GardenChloe, I really loved your rice dish and I thought it
was so good with the turkey. Thanks for
bringing it. I think I figured out what
your purple Penstemon is! I couldn’t
think of the name yesterday, but I was pretty sure it was one of the
PlantSelect plants, so I looked it up today and I’m pretty sure you have
‘Pike’s Peak Purple’! Check out the pics

is! I have one I think is spearmint, but
I can just barely get the scent off
of it! I’m really glad to have the one
from you, and I’m sure the folks I’m gonna give some plants to in spring will
be glad to have it too! I’m also virtually
certain the “lemon” one you had is lemon balm, and I’m gonna start a separate
thread with a couple links about it—if not tonite, hopefully tomorrow!

Zach, remember I’m waiting for a Review of the “ripe green
tomato!” Will make tomato sauce out of YOU at the next swap if you don’t give us a
report! (A couple of us almost DID come

Amy, I didn’t get home till it was dark out yesterday, and
didn’t feel like planting in the cold today (and then there was the GAME!), so
the ‘Hyperion’ got stuck in a pot until I get around to putting it in the
ground in the next couple weeks. I
looked that one up and it’s supposed to be “fragrant,” we’ll see, and it’s supposed to rebloom! I’m kind of guessin’ that’s not gonna happen! I’ll give you an update on the ‘Jethro Tull’
when it blooms next summer. Thank you so
much for that!

After I left the swap I went over to Amy’s too—to help her
get out of remodeling….. You all should
see her all-xeric, all-perennials front yard!
It’s pretty amazing! LisaLu, when
Amy says she has the plants you want, BELIEVE HER! OMG, she has all those things, in ALL
different sizes coming up everywhere! You
can get all those and more at future swaps!

Thank you Amy for digging up some ‘Pink Panda’ strawberry
and some Viola labradorica for me! They
both went in pots today—the violet will go in the escape-proof-garden soon—BEFORE
those seed pods dry and start SHOOTING seeds all over the place! And now that I know LizBest likes DANGEROUS
plants, when I get enough of them I’ll bring a start along for her at a swap—bet
she’ll like the pretty leaves on that one too! I’ve decided that after losing the strawberry
over winter a couple times already I’m gonna keep it inside till spring this
time. I don’t think it would be any
problem in the ground, but I want to keep it in a pot so I can have it on the
deck over summer! AND, thank you for all
the Oenothera seed pods! This morning (I
was too tired to move last nite!) I
looked at them and decided I want a WHOLE LOT of them! They’re really cool looking in a basket as a centerpiece,
and that’s where the ones I brought home are now, and I think I’m gonna have
some trouble breaking one of them up to get the seeds out now! Hmmm!
More seed pods on my list of things I want for next year! (BTW, your directions on how to get home from
there were perfect—well, until I got back into the traffic jam on the north end
of I-25 again!)

Amy’s house, by the way, is going to be perfect for a future
swap! You all are gonna love seeing both
her front and back yards! But I agree, she really does need to get a
railing on the back deck first! The way
it is now it could be kind of dangerous for those of us who get drunk at the
swaps! ;-D

Misty, I love your little lemon bar thingies! And they were GREAT with the brownies—thank you to whoever brought those—from a
Chocoholic! I hope you saw LizBest’s
comment about keeping my plants in the pots for now and didn’t try to put them
in the ground today! When I finish this
post I’m gonna do a separate post with the info again on what to do with the
recently potted plants I brought, just in case somebody missed it! And I’m gonna start a separate thread with
some info about the hibiscus that I looked up today—it’s already 10, so
probably not tonite anymore!

I was going to post that there were no pictures of this
swap, but I’m really glad to see you got some, FlowerRidge! (I don’t know what looks wrong about them to
you, but they look good to me!) I had
two cameras with me, but I was so busy enjoying myself that I didn’t think
about getting them out this time! I’m

From Skybird to EVERYBODY!

“Cups of Plants!”

Just in case anybody missed this yesterday, if you got any of the plants I brought, KEEP THEM IN THE POTS till they have roots (plural—more than
one root!) visible all the way to the bottom of the pot! They were all potted within the last two weeks after I got home from my trip--the date on the pot is when they were
potted! If you take them out of the pots now to put them in the ground I'd say there's less than a 50/50 chance of them making it. There's still plenty of time to let them root well and still get them in the ground before it gets cold.

Let them dry AT LEAST halfway before watering them (Anemone
sylvestris and Ajuga ‘Black Scallop' can be kept a little wetter) By leaving the soil dry that much it will help draw the roots down more quickly. If you keep them wet all the time they'll just sit there and smile at you--and not grow any roots!

For the LAVENDER, the ‘White Nugget’ ICEPLANT, and the SEDUM kamtschaticum ‘Variegatum’, let them dry
all the way before watering them again.
Too wet, especially for the lavender and the iceplant, will KILL it!

To check to see if they're rooted well enough to put in the ground, just
be sure the soil is wet enough that it won't fall apart and knock them
out of the pot to look. If you don't see roots on the bottom put them
back in the pot and give it a slight push to seat it back tightly in the
pot. The different plants will root at different rates, so don't
assume if one thing is ready to plant out that they all will be.

If anybody has ANY questions about what to do with the plants I brought, please post here so I can answer them. After taking the time to pot them up I really would like to see you all succeed with them.

And if anybody is wondering what they look like and didn't see my links further up in this thread, I posted links to pics of all the things I brought somewhere up above. Sorry I can't post the actual pics anymore, but that's just the state of things since houzz! At least the links work!

Hi all! I just wanted to say thank you to Arlene for hosting and to everyone for being such a generous and welcoming group. I'm trying to finish up my BA in Bio (pre-vet) and it's been a torturous,well, 6 months. It's rare I have any joy in my life (it's being sucked away by organic chemistry!), but yesterday was the most fun I've had in months! I learned so much yesterday about Co gardening (I could seriously listen to Skybibrd all day) and had fun planting all I was able to yesterday (not Skybirds!). Marj, I started a few more clones of the ROS so if those don't make it I will have more in the spring :). I'm going to try to clone a few of the hibiscus as well...or at least get some seedlings started for the next swap (I'll try to have names next time!). Lizbest, I planted my seeds today so who knows? Maybe I'll get to bring you peonies in a few years? I hope! Zach, it was a slippery slope...I bought a pumpkin pie today :-P (it wasn't as good as yours!). I did wash it down with healthy cucumber water :-D Thank you everyone! See you in the spring!

I had not planted yours (or any of my treasures) yet, so your timing is perfect :) I'm thinking of putting my two lavender plants (when the roots are to the bottom) in my front window flower box. It gets so hot up there, I haven't had much luck with anything doing well. When I looked up 'lavandula augustifolia', I found a site that said "Lavender must be grown in full sun to be able to produce flowers, so do
not hesitate to plant them in those hot, dry areas where nothing else
seems to grow. They will actually grow better in poor,
gravelly soil than in rich humus; don't be tempted to enrich the soil
when you plant it. Sharp drainage, especially in winter, is essential
for preventing crown rot. Other than that, Lavender is known to have
few problems with pests and diseases. Shearing back the evergreen
foliage in early spring will rejuvenate plants and stimulate new growth." What do you think - will it be ok in a flower box?

So glad you enjoyed my lemon-lime bars. I used a box mix for key lime bars, but for a twist, I used lemon juice instead of water. Then 'cause Halloween is around the corner, I just had to put a couple of candy corns on top ;-)

Zoogrl - wow, you are a busy lady! So glad you came and got some fun!! Thanks for thinking of me on the ROS - I'll keep you posted on mine. Does it have any roots yet? In any case, I think I will keep it inside till next spring before planting, to let it keep more developed before I leave it in the elements. I also need to amend the soil in the spot I want it to grow, and add some soaker hose to help me water it properly (it's in a far corner that I tend to forget about).

Loved the tutorial on the hibiscus, Skybird. Can I volunteer now for one on dividing peonies next fall? I have plenty of duplicate NOIDs--I can bring one as an entire root so everyone can see what to do when dividing and then use the pieces in the trade. And I can bring seed pods with both viable and non-viable seed so everyone can see what they look like!

My pepper jellies a good and mild... well, to me they are lol. I also "taste test" my peppers before using them in jelly to see how hot they are (the aji's are hotter than the hab's this year, I think, but I will eat raw aji's because I think they taste good, I don;t care for the flavor of plain, raw, habanero.)

Skybird, I haven't eaten the tomato yet, but I will do an entire write up about it for you haha. I DID say I would share with you, but you didn't want to.

I agree, I would like division class. I had a peony that I bought in a container back in the spring. I planted it on Saturday along with the root piece that I got from you Liz. I probably could have dived the one I got from HD, which was a little root bound from being in a pot all summer, but didn't really know where to cut so I just stuck the whole thing in the dirt after "unbinding" the roots.

P.S. I have a confession make about the pie... It wasn't really "pumpkin" pie, it was butternut pie... I haven't found any good pie pumpkins for sale.

Lizbest! YES, I would love that! Marj, no roots, I took them that morning...dipped them in in "life" and put them in cloning "root riot" sponges (they have more hormones in the sponge). I thought about it later and I should've put it in soil for you, but I'm trying hydroponics and it's just what I had :-P. I would leave them in the sponges and just add soil around them (I'm partial to foxfarm smart naturals or anything with that fluffy consistancy like Skybird demoed). Or, if you happen to have an aerogarden the sponges fit right in. Zach, dude, that's even more impressive!!

I, along with everybody else, think that a show-and-tell
about peonies—roots, seeds, and anything else—is a wonderful idea,

I just finally got around to cutting the seedheads off of my
“tricolor” peony plant today! I was
planning to cut them and bring them along to the swap for anybody who wanted to
play, but in the end I was so busy cooking food that I forgot all about
it! I never got around to deadheading
the last of the flowers, and at least a dozen of them developed seed. I’ll plan to bring whatever I get along to
the spring swap for whoever wants some!

ZooGirl, I don’t think ANYBODY wants to listen to me all
day! But thank you for that! I’m glad you found some useful info in what I
had to say! You really do have your
plate full right now! So glad we were
able to provide you with a brief respite from your studies. Just remember, even if it doesn’t seem like
it at times now, when it’s (school) all over with it will have been worth
it! I don’t know anything about “root
riot” sponges, but check out David’s method of propagating cuttings in pure
perlite that I linked in the Hibiscus thread.
You might find some useful info there.

Misty, what kind of a mix did you use for those (lemon) lime
bars? I was tasting mostly the lemon,
but I love lime—even better than lemon—so maybe that’s why I liked them so
much! How much soil is in your planter
box—depth, width? I think that may work out
pretty well for the lavender, and being hot and sunny will definitely work, but
being in a container they will definitely need to be watered, and you’ll need
to figure out how often to do it so they don’t stay too wet, but get enough
water that they don’t die. In the ground
is easier since—well—since they’re in the ground!!! The roots aren’t “limited” by the container
and can grow wherever they want/need to, to get “enough” water to keep them
happy. The other thing you might want to
think about is if they’ll get too tall in front of a window! When they’re blooming, even on the ones I’m
constantly cutting down to the ground, they get a good 12-18” tall, and it
seems to me that could be a problem depending on the placement of the “box” in
front of the window! Just something to

ground below the window?) With the
little seedlings, if you put them in the box for this winter you’ll need to be
sure the soil doesn’t dry out ALL the way over winter—but you will need to let it dry down to the “bottom
of the roots” before watering it.

Zach, seriously, if we had cut that tomato in half we would
have both wound up with “tomato sauce” by the time we got home! Better you got the whole thing so you can eat
it whenever you want to and then let me know what you thought of it! Since you do pics here on the “new RMG,”
maybe take a pic of it before you cut it so when you post others will know what
you’re talking about! Your “butternut
pie” was great! (Ok, I assumed it was
canned pumpkin!!!) I know Digit talks
about making squash pie, but it is absolutely amazing how much squash tastes
like pumpkin—especially when it’s in a pie!
If you hadn’t said it was squash, I never would have known!

skybird - I used Krusteaz brand, and it was their Key Lime mix. They do also make a lemon bar, but they didn't have any when I was shopping a couple of months ago. So I picked up the lime one and never made them. Just thought it would be fun to make them a lemon-lime version.

My flower boxes aren't real deep - about 8 inches. They whole box is about 4 feet long, but only about 8 inches wide on the inside. So that may be part of the problem with growing things in it as they soil seems to dry out pretty quickly, before I realize it! In the past, I added the moisture beads as well as coir mats trying to keep the moisture in the soil. Not sure it really helped here that much! Although 12-18 inch tall plants wouldn't bother me, I'm rethinking putting the lavender there - maybe I just need to get some wider/deeper boxes.

Zach - butternut pie! Yea, I agree with the others. It was very tasty!!
