Unless you keep it too soggy, too often, you can't kill this plant. I'd be confident doing what you described. When I dig them up & put them upside-down on the surface to die, it can take half a year for the shriveling to finish. (A novelty house plant up north, hideous weed here. Hardy & the berries cause new sprouts to come up wherever, all over... must be dug, this plant will not just pull up.)

Harvesting seeds might be another option. How far north are you? Turning a black pot upside-down over plants could help you cheat by at least a zone. Adjacency to a basement wall can sometimes help with zone-cheating by more than that, depending on whether or not the wall is brick or dark color, and which direction it is facing. A window-well can be magic.

In the past we've seen 106 degrees in summer to 17 below in the winter; feet of rain or weeks of drought and then there's always the possibility of winter's layers of ice or foot of snow. You just never know what you're going to get. Writing this I'm asking myself what the upside is to Derby City !?!

No noxious weed here, so that's a plus. Just really lush beautiful plants with zero maintenance in hours of scorching sun or moist shade.

I think even trying to protect outdoors over winte is out, but I do have the cool, dark indoor option. So I'm going to go with this and really appreciate your feedback. Thanks again !
