What's wrong with my privet?

I have a young privet hedge that I'v been establishing. No problems until this year. As you see in the pictures, there is yellowing/spotting on some leaves. Some plants have a washed out or dusty-looking appearance. A couple have died back, and fungus is evident. Bark scraping has shown nothing out of the ordinary.

We had an amazingly wet summer (5 times the average rainfall), and I wonder if that has come into play. I have about 100 plants...this is affecting maybe 8-10 plants.

Any ideas?

remove all dead rotting wood ...

is it deciduous?? .. if so.. not much impressed by ugly leaves in fall ... and you note its been one heck of a year ....

washed out and off color sounds like powdery mildew ... so what if deciduous ...

could we see a more larger overview ...

even that last pic.. with the rotting wood.. seems to show a lot of new sprouts for next spring ....... i think ...

Ken, the symptoms started showing in July (the fungus and some yellowing/spotting). The powdery look is similar to what I've seen on lilac leaves that have powdery mildew.

These are deciduous.

Over the summer, it seemed like I had lost about 5 shrubs. However, when I cut back the fungus-laden/dead branches, there is always new growth generating from the bottom. In fact, the 4 other suspected-dead shrubs have recovered (albeit with the fungus/mildew). The image where you see the small new growth is the only one that truly looked dead.
