Need specific feeback on Bosch 500 & 800 induction cooktops controls

Yes, I know, another induction thread. I'm sorry but I haven't found anyone who can answer my questions, even at the appliance stores. I'm hoping someone here can help me. :)

I am trying to decide between a Bosch 500 and 800 induction cooktop. The main difference between the two (that matters to me) is the controls. It *looks* like you have to "tap, tap, tap" on the 500's controls to set it. For example, you want to set the burner to 6, you tap it 6 times. If that is correct, I know it would drive me crazy and that I need to go with the 800 instead.

For anyone who has the 800, can you just press "6" and be done with it? Or do you have to slide up to "6", then press it?

And a final 800 question, it is better to go with our without the stainless trim? I'd seen people go both ways- one saying the stainless trim protects against chipping the induction edge, another saying the stainless can get dented/scratched. Does anyone have experience with either one they are willing to share?

Thanks so much!

I can't comment on the controls since I don't own that brand, but I will give my feedback on the stainless edge. I opted to go without the stainless edge for ease of cleaning. Figured crumbs or spills would get stuck in that little groove along the stainless. Have you searched for the 800's manual online? Maybe you could find your answer there.

Just got my Bosch induction range. It is tap, tap, tap. Not really annoying, but there is a learning curve. I did manage to heat up a meal with the directions by my side.

thanks for letting me know. :) I appreciate it and it does make my decision easier.

On another note some appliance stores offer cooking classes on new purchases such as these to ease the learning curve (I know that ours does). We purchased the 36" bosch induction cooktop and 800 series wall oven. I was told that with this particular cooktop you HAD to purchase the Bosch wall oven. Anyone know if that is true? We have obviously yet to install so I can still change my mind. I keep wavering on the safety of the magnetic field too......any thougths?

is the oven going below the cooktop? if it's just going on the wall and not underneath, I can't see why you'd need a Bosch oven.

swrite: Is the Stainless edge the Flush or Proud Mount? TY

For what brand, the Bosch? I have a GE, so not sure about the Bosch.

Well sockie, right now its going under but I'm trying to figure out an alternate plan, which I posted under a separate thread. So far, noone has answered (cries)....

rfrank1031: My understanding--after considerable due diligence--regarding the placement of an Induction Cooktop over a Wall Oven is that Miele (and

POSSIBLY Electrolux) are the only ones that allow that placement. I know that because Miele's Induction Cooktop is shallow, the Wall Oven can be placed under the Miele Induction Cooktop. My understanding is the operative issue

has to do with the cooling fans needed to ensure that the electronics are

properly kept cool from the heat emanating from the cooktop/oven. I have a

small Chicago kitchen and simply do not have the space to re-locate an Oven.

My current old KA radiant electric cooktop does sit over my KA convection Oven, which speaks to the different requirements for radiant electric cooktops vs electric induction cooktops. Full disclosure... NOT positively certain about

    the Electrolux.

swrite: Miele Induction Cooktop. Think the terms Flush or Proud Front apply

    to all brands.

sorry, rfrank, I am of no help. my oven is in the wall, not below. good luck with finding your answer.

Lexi, I'm not sure since I don't have the stainless edge either and I don't recall that term from doing my research. I think the stainless edge ones I saw in store from other brands were probably proud mount (assuming that means sitting slightly above counter while flush means even with). Don't think Miele was one of the brands I researched and don't recall seeing their induction cooktops in my area either.

That's interesting lexi65. How would I go about finding out if the same holds true for Bosch? I guess I can call them and find out....

Could you guys do a slide-in induction range if a cooktop over the oven isn't possible?
