If you are considering both, your best bet is to get a sample of each and do your own testing. They have very different properties. Lava is impervious to staining and its finish does not change or patina and in my experience, over years, does not chip. It comes in a range of colors, both standard and custom. Soapstone will develop a patina, needs maintenance to look its best and can chip. Some soapstones are harder than others. It is also impervious to staining and the grain pattern of the stones vary, so it is best to see the slabs in person.
