I'm in zone 5. What works for me for most of these is a couple hours of sun and shade the rest of the day. I haven't had any trouble here and don't fuss with them. Some extra water in dry spells. Looks like you are zones between cakbu and me. I have never grown them in containers. The only time I have lost one was planting late in the season, not enough time for root development.

I have grown Crimson Curls in both full sun (11 am to sundown) and shade. They stay more crimson and more curly in the sun. The ones in shade turn quite green and the leaves flatten out as they mature. I have found that they do want regular water either way. I'm in zone 7b/8 (on the Hood Canal).

I have noticed, coastal N. C. and in the Piedmont of N. C., that these year-round favs really do best in containers, and require some sunlight as well. Glad to read others are experiencing the same! Thanks.
