I think something smaller and simple is the way to go! Its not always necessary to have a focal point on the wall since your furniture and rug are stand out pieces.

No I can't replace furniture... it's not happening right now, I'd love to down the road but just not right now. The existing furniture is not blue, it's more of a dark sage. I guess everything is just looking blue because of all the blue. I do like the idea of a soft white curtain so I am going to swap those out and try to find some different pillows

Think 3 colors to a room. Always remember the rule of threes. Study what complimentary colors and bring in some. And yes, put the closet doors back up and keep them closed until it is time to watch TV. For God's sake no more blue. I would not be able to sit in that room and visit with you.

Put tv on the couch wall. Float couch.

The built in can serve with a desk in it or closet. Turn rug around to be in front of fp.

Cream or natural duck slipcover for the loveseat or sofa or both. Not too expensive and perfect with kids. Add at least one other color. Here I show yellow.

Your Homestyler rendering is much improved. Yes to the yellow pillows and art. Is that art you show the one you've actually ordered? If so, it looks like there may be a kind of neutral tannish color there which ties into the wood framed mirror and could be brought out with some more wood objects, natural wood candlesticks or a simple wood bowl.

I would still suggest natural colored slipcovers, though. Not only is there too much of the blue-green, but it's very intense. A color that bold is best taken in smaller doses so it doesn't overwhelm.

HI -- @ Aunt Jaci -- Your a nice Aunt . Point being she did ask us for help , right . We are not dictating our style on her but helping her with hers . Many ideas and opinions helps her sort it out . We all get stuck on things like this ... even well meaning designers .

Good point, Aunt Jaci, but I don't think anyone on here is trying to push their "taste" on Angie. From what I read I and everyone else are trying to suggest good design principles, but in the end it is what Angie wants. However she did turn to Houzz for help so she must have sensed something is not working - and it isn't. My mother decided to redecorate her formal living room and she turned it from a place of beauty and serenity to a place I could barely stand to walk into - but she was happy.

I was so nervous when I decorated my first home at age 30 I hired an interior designer. I asked why to everything she suggested and googled interior design. Now, at age 69, people see my home and hire me to do theirs. Good luck, Angle

This is the last I will say. I think either the sofa or love seat or both screams for a cream colored cover. The coffee table should go as soon as possible, like last week. It only lets more blue scream through. I love my off white distressed round coffee table. It would be great in your room. The room needs some curves and solid wood would break up some of that blue in the room, because all I can do after seeing the room is sing songs with Blue in the title. Right now it's Blue Moon. Hi. Back to your original question about the two focal points. I see a couple people have recommended putting your TV along the couch wall (or even angled in the window corner to the right of the fireplace) and having the couch face it and the love seat in an L shape to the couch, facing the fireplace. Then you could make a desk/shelves for storing kid items in the present TV nook. Would look so nice. Although, Having twins myself, I can see that having the love seat kind of dividing the room this way might be a problem as you couldn't see thru the whole room to see what the kids are doing.

yeah down the road we've talked about changing the built-in the original owners did. For now though, I convinced Wayfair to let me return the rug for free. So the only things left will be my existing couch and love seat. I'm thinking more along these lines

Looking good with the pale carpet. I had twins too and they were such a riot. Luckily girls, I adore Mom's who have twin boys; there is a special place in Heaven for them. haha

I have girls too thankfully! 3 yr old son though on top of it, strangely enough my brother has a set of twins boys and every time I see them I thank Jesus that I had girls :)

We had six girls then we had two more boys. If you can get past the first three years it is sooo much fun, well most of the time, but now that everyone is grown, done with college, and married we get together twice a year for a girls weekend in the winter months (moms ONLY and NO children or babies unless someone is nursing) and then have a week in the summer for Cousin's Camp.....it is quite the activity getting to know all the little ones and the now teens. This summer we taught everyone how to water ski!

Wow... I don't know how you did it. Staying home with these three is enough for me!

HI -- My sister- in- law is from a family that has four sets of twins and a single . All lived in a house a little over a thousand square feet with two bathrooms .

I like the carpet! My twins were a boy and girl...so much fun! Plus two other girls but luckily our neighborhood had lots of boys for my son to play with!

The fireplace would look less cluttered and a lot better if you left everything else off both the HIGH mantel and the wall except for ONE item hung on the wall above the mantel -- one and only one piece of art or decoration on that wall that is wide and rectangular in shape.

I like blue but your space has a bit much for my taste. All the walls would need to be repainted a neutral tan or light brown, making sure the tan did not have a pink or yellow hue to it.

The rug and drapes and sofa cushions would need to be removed, repurposed or stored. The rug would be shades of tan and beige and brown. The drapes and sofa cushions would be one of the colors that was in the rug.

There would be white louvered bi-fold closet doors in front of the television to close when not watching it.

The upper kitchen cabinets would be painted white to match the cabinets around the television.

What would be put on blank wall about the sofa would likely be art that is not a picture or painting -- something crafted.

Angie, 16 month old twins and a 3 year old? Seriously I don't even know how you have time to think about your house! I have ONE 2 1/2 year old granddaughter and am exhausted after 2 hours. You are doing great! Work around what you have to tone down the blue. It may be our monitors are just showing everything as the same color. Just add in some more color and like Groveraxle said raise the curtains. :) Have a happy day!

rome, I know you're offended by the "peddlers," but just a word in defense of some of them. Some of them offer useful information and advice in addition to showing us products we might not have known existed. And yes, I'm sure they'd love to make a sale, but that doesn't mean all their recommendations are worthless. Besides, it's easy enough to scroll on by if you're not interested.

Ok so I decided part of wasn't working was that the colors I was choosing were competing with the natural red/orange brick and flooring. So using the natural colors of the house something along these lines is what I've come up with... thoughts?

This is a much better look. I notice that your sofas are now more green than blue. I suspect we're not getting a true read on their colors, and that this rendering is more true to life.

I like how you have brought the colors of the art into the room and suggest that you wait for your actual art to arrive before adding your accessories. Keying off the colors in your art will really pull this space together.

Angie, is that the true color of your sofas? I kept thinking that you had shot the original photo through a blue filter. This is like seeing it for the first time. No wonder your kitchen cabinets looked blue. This is wonderful!

I feel like there is to much blue...yes. But I think the main thing I am struggling with is the blue items are the biggest ones in the room. Strong colors for the most part, in my opinion, should be accents. I would choose between the furniture or the rug. My eyes cant decide where to land. OR! keep them both and tie in some taupe and white. Ditch the blue and gray pillows...put some rustic wooden coffee table and something interesting above the hearth. Taupe pillows and cream curtains....yeah just make it warmer. Blue is a very cheerful but cold color.

It would be nice if the people actually read the entire post before offering their suggestions!

I can't believe what you accomplished in such a short period of time. You've done a great job. I wouldn't put anything over the fireplace....just some tall accessories. I would maybe put some coordinating artwork over the couches. . And yes...you don't have to fill every space. Your blues are strong and beautiful.

I agree with suzyq53 - I feel like we haven't really seen your room. The same photos without the blue filter would really help.

Use the rug to anchor your furniture in the space. The big sofa pieces look like they're floating in the room.

OK, getting caught up on all the comments on here...most of the blue pieces are gone. I've decided to stick with the oranges that are in the house naturally and maybe just a couple small baby blue accents. Unfortunately I can't do the original pictures without whatever filter was on. The last picture is a pretty true representation of my actual room. with a few pieces, i.e the rug, layered in from homestyler. When we order a new rug we're thinking something neutral like the one in the pic.

I would change the draperies and the rug to ones that are quieter and add a lovely soft landscape painting above the mantle.
