Yet another question! This coffee table?

last modified: 11 years ago

A coworker is selling this coffee table which I think is lovely. It's actually her mother's and she doesn't know the maker, only the dimensions and the fact that it's in great condition with no defects or scratches. (Sorry for the not so great quality photo. It's a picture of a picture.) I've always loved barley twist legs. How do you think it would look in place of what we currently have in our living area? DH hates our current table and yeah, up close it looks cheap and is wonky. It was an inexpensive Craigslist purchase. I know someone said here before that they liked the color of the current table, and I'm wondering if the barley twist table would be too much dark wood? On the other hand, what's there now sometimes looks out of place to me - jarring.

The barley twist table is 2.5 inches taller than our current piece at 24" in height and the same diameter, 40". Any issue with that size, I wonder? It will be difficult to see the table first without committing to buy it as the mother lives out of town but has offered to deliver the table to the buyer. She's asking $200. Thoughts?

By the way, I nixed the tiered table from Dillards that I was looking at them other day. So that's off the table (bad pun intended).

The round table is pretty; I think the wood tone would look great in your room. I wonder, though, with the shape of your seating arrangement, if an oval or rectangle might not be better than round? Could you mock up some other shapes on top of your current one to see how they look? Or maybe the round is ideal for you?

I like the round shape but now I'm back to being hung up on the height of this piece. I measured the sofa and chair and the seat height is 19", arms are at 32". At 24", this table is really tall compared to the seats, isn't it?

Darn it! Is it just my week to come across tables I really like that are too tall for me? Ugh!

I really like the barley twist legs in your room. As soon as I saw them I was drawn to the tufting of your leather couches. For some reason, for me, they seem to coordinate. I do like the dark wood as well. Its a characteristic of a table that I would consider for your room.

Another barley twist fan here! All may not be lost; check the pics in the link below -

I love the table! I also think the color would fit better in your room. The only thing is your couches are low and if this one is higher I am not so sure. Maybe mock up the height. 200 is a great price for such a lovely coffee table.

Love the table, especially the legs. I think it might be too dark though , if I look at your photo, I see the heaviness of the family room with the lightness of the kitchen. I prefer the light color of the table you have now. If you have all dark tones in your family room, it creates an imbalance between the two rooms where in an open concept flow and balances are important. Just my two cents.

Oh, love it! Is the diameter large enough? I'm the opposite of Rose: I think the darker color with work better in your LR.

Now I'm thinking we will get it. DH loves it and thinks the height is fine. I took some pics of

a little round Stickley table we have that is also 24" high. The barley twist will have about the same visual heft, particularly with the same style top, only in 40" diameter.

Ugh, sorry for the wonky photo placement! Darn phone.

I do like a table high enough to put a glass or plate on without reaching down. How is that height for propping your feet on (if you do that)?

I have a round barley-leg table between two chairs, but it's tall. I love it. Go for it. If you don't like it after a while, sell it!

I'm a fan of taller coffee tables, and they're surprisingly hard to find. It makes it so much easier to serve food and beverages from. I had a friend of Swedish ancestry who told me higher tables were much more commonly found in Europe. Post a picture when it arrives!

I like the table but think you need contrast to the dark sofa. I have a dark gray couch and without even thinking about it bought an espresso coffee table and have never liked it...it just is too much dark together. I like the color of your current table. It provides a nice contrast and the tone is echoed in your rug and art.

I like the table. It looks sturdy and in good condition too! I don't think the height would bother me after I got used to it.

Yep, I do believe we will go for it. Here's a slightly better photo of the table. I just think it's so pretty! We aren't coffee table foot proppers, but DH especially likes the fact that he'll no longer have to reach DOWN to retrieve something from the table in front of the sofa or chair. Thanks for helping me think this through and offering various opinions! Hopefully I'll be able to get this in our home soon. Yay!

I think I will bring in a few lighter touches, such as new throw pillows for the sofa. One thing calls for another!

Also....if you're the use the coffee table like an ottoman types, it may be too high to rest your legs on comfortably.

Nope, no leg resting on the coffee table. :-) I've just committed to my coworker that I will buy it, so almost a done deal.

My3dogs - thanks so much for that link! Not sure why I couldn't get it to open properly on my phone, but I can now view the photos and yes, I think a taller coffee table looks just FINE in those settings. Hoping it will also look fine in mine! Here's another pic I found with a tall barley twist - looks to be slightly smaller diameter than the one we'll be getting.

It's great! I'm envious! Please post when it's in your house.

I love barley twist legs! We have an antique drop leaf table with the barley twist legs and I have a smaller table in our home office with the barley twist legs. Not to mention the barley twist vintage candle holders that I bought after lusting over the ones My3dogs had!!! (Made into mantle lamps if I remember correctly???)

I'm so glad you mentioned new pillows. Don't throw something (LOL), but those pillows have bothered me, I just didn't want to say something. I think it's the color, which I know is in your rug, but I think it is because the green background of the art nearby is so different. Probably just me, but I think another color would look great. Perhaps even a pattern, such as stripes? Or maybe a textured fabric. I always use covers a couple of inches smaller than my (down only!!) inserts. Just my preference. It's all coming together so nicely Jen!!

Ha! I'm just chuckling over the fact that the pillows bugged you. I hadn't even noticed how different they are in color than the pony painting, but you're right about that. On the other hand, the canvas which is directly across from the sofa they're on (the larger one with the multiple horses) does have that sagey green in it, so they don't look out of place when you're actually IN the room. That's one thing I dislike about posting photos -- they never convey what things really, truly look like in person. I will probably keep them, but add a pair of patterned pillows. I like the idea of stripes. Or even a kilim of some sort, as I have no qualms about layering pattern on pattern. The Union Jack goes with nothing in the room, but it's not going anywhere because I loooooove it. ;-)

Hmmmm...it's a gorgeous table. I think it's perfect, actually, for the square where the chair and sofa meet.

Tib, it would actually be too large for that space. These photos are deceiving, I'm tellin' ya!

I love it Jen! Don't understand the granny comment......I've always thought of barley twist legs as classic. The height wouldn't bother me. Better too high than too low. Get it! ;)

I wish the coffee table in my family room was taller. The annoying part is that it was custom made, so it could have been taller, but no one noticed it was a bit too low for the sofas I had picked. Rookie "decorator" mistake, that I no longer make! I now double check every dimension. It is just under 17" and would fit much better at just under 19". I'll find a replacement one day when I'm finished with other projects! The taller coffee tables are very hard to find.

Jen, I think it will look great in your space :-)

Thanks all! The woman selling the table is delivering it to us on Saturday - a bonus that we don't have to go get it! I'm so excited! Over a coffee table! A dang coffee table! :-D

I love your new table! The color and height are perfect. I was going to suggest adding color through accessories, but looks like you're on top of that!

I'm glad you bought it! I didn't even fully see the photo right, caught a glimpse of the legs, and said yes out loud! Barley twists aren't granny. The height looks fine to me too. Excited to see it in it's new home!

I love barley twist legs, they are just so sturdily English! Cocktail tables CANNOT BE TOO TALL. Tall tables are so much more functional, you will be thrilled with the extra height. I think the price is good, too.

May I ask what colour your walls are? They look nice and neutral.

The current ligher colored table would look nice in your media room

I think Tib meant your sample height smaller table would be good in the square between the chairs.

Ok, pillows then: what would you choose? I don't want to cover the couch with them but maybe have two on each end. I've been looking online and haven't found anything that thrilled me. I'd like to stick with something with sort of a southwest vibe but a sophisticated look too. Nothing cutesy. (Union Jack notwithstanding!)

I think I would start looking at cushions that had some cream and red pulled from in the rug.

OK - I read all and think you made the right decision. How exciting :-) The higher table is unusual to me but I like the photo you posted. And, if you don't put your feet up and like the height all the better. I think the darker wood will look great and as previously mentioned your gourd/pottery bowl (?) will look great on that table. Can't wait to see it. Maybe you could get the seller to make you a deal on that great clock!

Auntjen, Ive enjoyed enough of your pics and it didn't seem to me that the table fit your style. But perhaps I used the wrong word. Instead of grannyish, I think I should have said very traditional, which again, you don't strike me as being a staunch traditionalist. And just so you know Im not back-pedaling, yes I think table is nice, but no, I don't like it as much as to not consider other choices.

But as somebody posted, who cares what we think? it's what you want that counts, and you seem to know where you want to go, style wise. So enjoy your new table and keep sharing pics, they're fun to look at.

    Your kitty has 16 legs?????

Heehee! Four kitties with four legs = 16. ;-)

I truly appreciate all of the opinions expressed here. Varying thoughts help me think things through from all angles,

DebraW - I thought I could put my hands on the document that lists the paint used in this house but I'm not sure where it is at the moment. I'll keep looking and hope to come across it soon. I'm pretty sure the builder used Sherwin Williams brand but I'm not sure of the colors.

Is it the same kitty that keeps photobombing your pics or do they just all look alike. I thought you only had one cat.

    Yep, the one w/16 legs....

Blfenton, did you spy the sprawly kitty belly of the cat that's totally relaxed by the dining room doorway? : )

Love the table, auntjen. I kept reading, hoping to see it in your space. Aw shucks, I have to wait at least til tomorrow.

Maybe pillows in earth tones, perhaps rusty red? The multi horse painting reads dominantly earth toned from a distance.

DebraW - Our interior wall color is Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige, with Alabaster as the trim. :-)

Ah ha! I knew I liked that colour! Accessible Beige is one that I had been considering for my next project. Thanks for getting back to me.

You are welcome. At first I thought they'd just used a typical "builder's beige", but I am loving this color. It looks different in different light at various times of the day - all lovely, I think. It's a very easy color to live with, I am finding.

I may have a rental apartment to paint in my future and will be looking for a nice neutral other than "apartment beige", which I guess is the same as "builder's beige". This one is definitely a contender!

I was going back and forth between Accessible Beige and Agreeable Gray for a rental apartment. Chose the latter, but either one would have been great.
