Roots for Pagan

Today I am repotting a tray of seedlings (A. obesum 'Flatbellate') that have reached their limit in the community pot. They are 14 weeks old and I have been putting off repotting since waiting on my new LED to arrive. I can't put it off any longer because they are crammed in there. This is a great example of leaving them in the community pot too long. The roots were somewhat tangled. I know Pagan likes to see pics of the roots so this thread is for her.

Sorry to jump in before Pagan but they look really healthy and pretty fat already, much fatter than mine, but when my seeds arrive from recommended sellers I hope to have something similar.

Can I ask what the root juice is please and what's it's purpose?

Hi Phil, thanks for the compliment. Some of these are really stunted because I had too many in the pot. They should have come out 2 weeks ago.

The root juice is a mixture of Rooting hormone diluted with water and super thrive. This helps reduce transplant shock when repotting.

    Roots! Roooots!!

    Slap slap. Okay.

These are very ohsum roots! And that explains the fatties above them. This is the perfect age to start playing with them, Tracy! Braid them, curl them around, wrap them around rocks or whatnot. Even put them flush against a Christmas ball or something, to spread them out. That third and fourth from last, for example, look perfect for braiding. It will be trickier if they were thicker. They all look very healthy and happy to me.

Thank you for taking root pictures! There is a reason we rarely do that--it's a pain in the derriere to be holding the thing in one hand and aiming a camera at it with the other.

Where the heck do you learn about the stuff you can do with the root system - glad it's something I can learn more about down the road but other than a bit of a trim I wouldn't have thought you would do anything else with them - lots to learn me thinks which makes me happy as I can see adeniums will be my main plant to focus on for the coming years and to try and spread the word for adeniums for other UK growers, to show that even with our rubbish summers anything is possible......(whispers) I hope :)

Pagan I am a root fanatic too. This is why I love using coco coir because the roots respond so well. What's funny is that this was just one single tray I did today. I have 3 more trays of 3 arabicum cultivars that are the same age as these and are ready to repot too. The problem is space. I cannot repot them until my Mars arrives. I imagine there will be lots of tasty roots then too.

Hey Tracy, when I bought my superthrive a bit back I also bought a product called Clonex. Sorry I can't get a link up on this phone I don't know-how to use properly, but they sell it on ebay, Amazon etc but am not sure if this would be OK as root juice or wether it's purely for encouraging roots to develop on cuttings? If anyone has a few mins could you ease check it out and see if I bought something useless lol.....pwetty pwease ;)

There are apparently lots of people using that product for marijuana cloning,Phil. And it's been used to "empower over 1,000,000,000 clones and counting"! I can make so many jokes about empowerment by dipping marginalized farmers, women and indigenous tribes in the stuff.

But, to answer your plea, a cursory search did not turn up anything about using it as a root bath. There is, however, something called a clonex solution being sold so I am guessing you can use your gel stuff to make one if it is water soluble.

Phil you can substitute the Clonex to make your root juice. I believe the active ingredients are the same.

Hi trace, you mean I can use it?

addicted2plants Southern IL USA thanked Phil UK zone 8b
  • 11 years ago

Here is what I would recommend Phil. If it is the GEL which I have read about, it may be better for you to soak your transplants in a bowl of super thrive diluted with water for 30 minutes to an hour. Then when you pull them out of the diluted mix, dip each plant into that gel then plant it. I don't think that this gel was intended to mix with water. I think this process I have outlined will give you the same results.

    Tracy

Sorry trace for being dense lol I don't have the gel, mine is a bottle of clonex mist which is a propagation spray in liquid form not gel.

No way you are not dense Phil! Since it is in liquid form I believe you can mix it in with the super thrive and water to make your root juice for soaking transplants. You like to buy the expensive products, don't you Phil? This will definitely work for your transplants.

One other thing worth mentioning is that when you exhaust your supply of Clonex you may consider getting the rooting concentrate. I have read that some of the Adenium breeders feed their Adeniums with the same Dyna Gro KLN formula twice each season to enhance root growth. More roots equals the production of more lateral branches.

Thanks tracy, I found this product thinking it was something else I think so got it, it cost me £6.95 delivered via an ebay shop, and it's 100ml bottle bit have seen it nearly double the price in other UK suppliers.

Will Def get the dyna grow product when I use this up which won't be too long as 100ml won't last too long I guess

Thanks a bunch for the info to both yourself and Pagan on this :)

This is by far the best forum I have come across, real people, no bullshit, just real life experience from very knowledgeable individuals who I am very grateful and happy to know and maybe one day with what I learn on here I too can help steer people in the right direction in their time of need :)

You know Phil I couldn't agree more with your statement. Before I found this Adenium forum (thank you again Gill!) I was lurking the marijuana grow boards to gather information about starting seeds and how to make my own media. Thank goodness I now have somewhere I can actually ask questions because I have something in common with the members and feel I can actually contribute to the conversation.

I learned indoor grow lights from those sources as well, Tracy. Those people do not kid around! They're always on the leading edge of commercial basement farming lol

Our little corner of the interwebz, though, is something else. It's a study/discussion/trade and craft/support group all rolled into one.

It is interesting reading about grow lights and many of the growers make statements that the LED lights are a work in progress, sorta speak. They state that although the LED lights have made leaps and bounds in their progress (improving them), that the income of most LED purchases is paying for studies to enhance them and make better?

These are just notes I have been reading and sometimes it drives me mad, reading all of this info. Almost overload and if you are "on the fence" about something. Can lead to becoming more unsure about purchase.

I feel I need to go by what people have tried here and go with this?

Already have a HO T5 Florescent fixture w 6 x bulbs in it and really need to feel confident about switching. Costs factored in.

The amount of growth and type of growth I noticed on my trees (seedlings and adult) this summer outside under full sun is unbelieveable. Whether I can continue this indoors, I do not know?

    Need assistance.

LED lights are new to me too and agree with the above.

I guess I will be shot down in flames but how come adenium plants both young and old grow wonderfully outside in the natural sunlight, I guess I am talking about the states, Thailand and the likes rather than the UK lol but still we have to mess with led lights to test them to get the right growth from the light thats the right distance from the plants? Or is the research still going into making LED's strong enough to enable us to say hang a light at the top of a 6ft tent that is strong enough to get fat compact growth for even small, young plants?

Rick you should do a cost analysis for over the next three years for both what is spent on energy and replacement T5HO bulbs. Then compare it with projected spend on the LED of your choice and its power consumption. That should help you with your conundrum.

    Tracy

Tracy, I am not fully decided, but do like what I hear about LED lights. A cost analysis would show a negative for quite some time, as initial cost of HO T5 fixture and bulbs would take quite some time to balance out. Overall cost of hydro for my T5 set up was exceptionally low for period used.

Have not given up on changing to LED's.

We did some estimates on LED lighting for the city. Figure that if EVERY household changes AT LEAST ONE bulb to LED it will cut combined energy consumption by 20 percent over the next five years. And we are just a small town of 5,200 … with 2,500 households ...

Dave that is pretty amazing. I am also curious about the status of the town usage.

Rick I would love to replace all of my florescent fixtures immediately with LEDs to lower my power bills and improve the growth of my plants. This would require buying a number of units which would be a rather large investment. I can relate to your position.

Thanks Marie, I was wondering if some of the runts should be culled. Even the runts are so cute.

Tracy, I really want to get one of those Mars hydro LED panels, especially and most importantly if the growth of the adeniums is noticeable doing so.

When I first started raising these. I have never in my wildest dreams thought of using artifial lighting through out winter months. Then friends told me that my seedling should be kept growing through the first winter and then if I wanted to allow them to go dormant in their second fall. This would be better.

So lights became important. Really was not anything I really wanted to do, but these plants are too I,portent to me. Go figure.

Power savings is definitely a bonus and means that you can leave on longer as well.

tracy: old town, old school. very few using LEDs, most folks still use incandescents and fluorescents in their shop lights. I run T8s 18/7 in my shop/grow lights and the energy usage in not really noticeable on the utility bill. City also is running a promotion that pays half the cost of purchase of bulbs and fixtures. i spent 100 and got almost 48 bucks back … of course i bought a big box of bulbs that will last me about 1/3 the life of your borax …. and it is nice that you basically buy two two-bulb fixtures and get one free … city has started experimenting with LED streetlights. The bulbs cost a bit more … 15 to 20 bucks each … but the real test will be over the lifespan of the bulbs, which were sold as lasting up to 20+ years. Should, they claim, pay for themselves in 3-7 years.

Dave, did you get squared away with Kevin/Beachlorax on the seeds?

Oh my marijuana grow boards...did not know there was such a thing. You have peeked my interest so off I go googling these boards. I'm starting to think I need to add some LED grow lights in my greenhouse. However, the cost associated with the MARS lights are a bit steep. I did a google on amazon and there are some that are much less expensive. Do you guys think the will be much less effective too?

Grasscity was the name of grow board where I read up on sowing seeds and making media. They are pretty knowledgeable.

LEDs...yes! I actually been testing some LEDs from Amazon. They make these screw in bulbs that you can use with clamp lights that run about $18 each. I have two of these bulbs shining on 11 juvenile plants and you can track the progress in that thread.

Also I picked out a Galaxyhydro on Amazon and put it on my wish list. It started at $140. I received an email that the price had gone down to $99.99 plus shipping so I placed the order right away. A week later they delivered it to the wrong city and state (Madison, Wisconsin) They claim to have reshipped my order but after another week passed nothing came. At that time I contacted them and asked for a tracking number which they could not provide. At that time I demanded a refund and began looking at the Mars Hydros.

After reading Mars' policies I was pretty glad I had the chance to make the switch because they guarantee their product for 3 years. They made it so the owner can replace bulbs when they burn out. The first year shipping of replacement parts is covered by Mars, by year 3 you have to pay for shipping.

Tracy, I did read the thread where you discuss using LED screw in lights for your clamp light. I actually have a clamp device. Did you see remarkable growth using that device? I just might get a screw in bulb too and try that first.

I also read about the fiasco you experienced with the other LED light you order. Bummer as it placed a bit of a stall on your plans. I just cannot see spending all that money right now on a light. I'm turning all my perennial gardens into various dwarf and miniature conifers (SLOWLY) so my cash is going there in larges amounts. LMBFBO. Not to mention my addiction to Adenium and Epiphylums. oi oi oi. I am SURE you know how much money one spends on plants. I have 20 acres with 2 acres in gardens and paths. I thought since everything was filled in I could spend my money elsewhere. baaa haaa now I am just taking out plants and buying new more expensive ones. Good grief! Houston, I do have a problem!!! I will live vicariously thru you, Martin and Phil with regards to the Mars LED lights until I get my gardens replanted.
