I like rugs to slip under the front 1/3 of the sofas and extend past the ends of them by at least a foot. I would have no trouble putting the sofas in an "L" similar to your top photo but pulled off the walls and forward so they cluster in front of the FP. Then I'd angle the chair and one of your end tables on the wall where you have the love seat in photo 2. Get painter's tape and tape out an imaginary rug that anchors the two sofas and leaves 12" of bare floor at the hearth. Look for a rug that has the colors that are in your chair. Also add pillows to the sofas in those colors. You might bring the table from the hall and put it under the large picture, both centered on that wall. Try that configuration and leave it for a few days to see how it works for you and your room.

Thanks Deco For your comments! I would bring the furn forward, but literally, there's only 12 feet from the front of the sofa and the hearth. Plus, the TV would be too close. I know, not much option here in this little place, but I'll give it a shot anyway

TV was not visible or mentioned when you first posted the dilemma. Consider placing the two sofas facing each other with the coffee between them, all perpendicular to the FP with the TV on the large wall where you have the bigger sofa now. This would allow you to upgrade to a credenza on which to set the TV. The chair could tuck in left or right of the TV and credenza. If it were my room, I'd actually get rid of the loveseat because they're such a pain to arrange. Most people don't want to sit that close unless they're lovers, hence the name and the invention of this awkward piece of furniture. Can you get a matching chair to the one you have, and use a pair of them instead of the love?

On the coffee table, I think a little lower and a little larger would be great....
I agree the rug should go under the furniture legs and out the sides, on the left probably to where the door starts?

Deco, I know what you mean about the love seat. Unfortunately, I just took delivery on this stuff 4 days ago. I waffled about the loveseat versus 2 chairs, but I was so sick of looking and indecision, I just went with it. I almost went with a little sectional. Now I'm wishing I had gone with chairs. I had it all made smaller scale too. Oh well. :-/.

Lesson learned! Maybe you'll come to the place where you can let it go and get what you really needed.

Probably not, because I picked out the fabric and had him customize the size. It was made to my specs. I always do this when I have a larger purchase... I look and look and get completely worn down, then make a decision that I pretty much regret. Did the exact thing with the flooring that we put in last month! :-/. I just told my husband that maybe the love seat can go in the spare room and we can get a couple of cute chairs instead. He looked at me with that "ohhhh nooo....here we go again!" look!! LOL

Nailgal, I'm liking the sofa and loveseat in the "L" configuration you show it in and wonder about putting the chair on the right side of the fireplace -- maybe turned conversationally toward the sofa/loveseat, rather than the TV. I think the fabric on the chair would look really great across from the art piece (hung 5-6" above the sofa, centered on the sofa, not the wall).

[For a different option, it does seem that the TV would look nice to the right of the fireplace, if the chair would fit comfortably on the left side.]

The chair is cute but the love seat is more comfortable for logging around. Don't regret it. with the sofas in an LA I think you can use a smaller rug.

VickiB,. Thank you for your comments :). I like the L configuration too as it's something we've never been able to do here. Just something a little different. That's why I had the furn made smaller really, other than the gigantic leather stuff we had before ate up the room. Yes, the chair would look nice to the right or left of the FP. I had it crammed in the right corner before but it hid behind the old love seat. Now at least I have some options :). The TV cable would have to be moved to put it to the right of the FP tho. Something to think about. Thanks again :)

I like the new rug-it's neutral and doesn't commit you to anything color wise. It would be great to find some cushion covers for the pillows on your sofa and use them to bring in some more of the colors in your chair. Hobby Lobby and Ikea sell both solids and prints at very reasonable prices. This one is $7.00 from Ikea.

Two thoughts: your artwork ( which, I assume, you are going to center on the couch) has many colors in it. Perhaps you could pull out some of those colors by selecting pillows and other accessories in your chosen accent colors. Also, you asked about the coffee table. I think it needs to be round or oval in shape with some lightness to it. Your current table seems too heavy. Otherwise, I love your L shaped, comfortable seating and the printed chair. Good luck!

Bea, good point on accent colors. How many colors should I go with? The picture has some turquoise in it, but the chair doesn't. Do you think pulling that color would work in addition to the red? Or something else? The coffee table will probably remain at least for the time being. I think something on top of it maybe would make it look better and bring in a little color. Back story: That table ( along with the two end tables that the TV is on) were cheapo K-Mart was originally this horrible color of orangy brown wood. I painted and distressed them. My husband cut some 40 year old redwood fence boards from our old fence, and I gave them a slight sanding, then a soft wax finish, then replaced the original table tops with those. I like rustic and repurposing things and always have my eye out for possibilities :). I just picked up a couple of old window frames in pretty raw condition and I am now trying to figure something to do with them. Sorry for the ramble! :)

Nailgal, I do love the furniture arranged this way! I do have some random thoughts about your great space, some are almost totally worthless... but they're FREE! :)

(1) I think katinparadise has a great idea about pillows (the green, Hobby Lobby ones), since both the art piece and the chair share that color. (I'm not saying it's wrong to have something else turquoise in the room, just that the pieces have the green in common.)
(2) I really DO think you'll be happy with the artwork centered over the sofa AND lowered to 5"-6" above the top of the sofa.
(3) It would be really nice if your table in the corner (of the sofa & loveseat) was square (or, at least, "beefier") AND was the same height as the sofa/loveseat arms. Maybe you can work some of your re-purposing magic and accomplish that!
(4) And now, for something REALLY random: As long as you are using the two square end tables under the TV, how bizarre ... or easy ... would it be to hang or tack or lean something white (cloth or poster board or plywood...) behind the stools creating a solid (at least in appearance) back on the "TV cabinet" blocking out the view of the cords?
(5) I love hearing the story of your tables, especially since I was sort of bothered by the coffee table's white base with your cream sofa and dark floors. Since you bought the beautiful, new rug, they don't bother me at all! I think they work just fine.

Vicki, thanks for all the suggestions! I moved the picture down and centered it. It does look better :). Plus I remembered an

antique table I got from my grand mother years ago, and it's been buried in the garage. So I dug it out and tho it's not hefty, it is taller. I think it looks a lot better but I'll look for something else to use that's got some bulk. Haven't done the TV yet, but I will get to it later. I plan on pillow shopping this weekend too. :)

I love it! Those two "tweaks" make SO much difference! The corner table doesn't actually show much, but the height really changes the look. I think it's totally your call whether or not you need to replace that table. Love it! :)

Your grandmother's table is great in the corner! A nice size and perfect height. It looks like a piecrust table that I used to have.

Thanks to both of you! Here's a photo of the table. Not my style, but it works. I remember it when I was little, and always called it the "violin table".

I was trying to find some left over chair fabric for pillow shopping, but of course I can't find any! I'll hack off some from under the chair. Katinparadise, that ikea pillow is a good green, and spot on!

Oh, and my husband is the best sport! He goes with me all over to look for all of these things and I think he actually likes it! ( or at least some what!)

Nailgal, your couch and love seat look sharp with the flooring. I think they were a good purchase. I like to change up my pillow covers with the seasons. I think white textures would be a good color for accent pillows with one striking print picking up on the wall color.

Isatkowski, I love Pier 1 ! I would like to include my wall color in a pillow as well. My kitchen back splash accent is the same color. I don't know quite where to stop with accent colors tho. Before the earthquake last year, I had a bunch colorful bowls and pottery on top of the kitchen cabinets. I lost a lot of them, so I took the rest of them down, and I like how uncluttered it looks now. Plus, we repainted, did floors, and I started going with a more farm/cottage look. It was like a carnival in here with me and my every color of Fiesta Ware, pulling those colors for everything. Overkill !

I would move the tv and hang it on the wall across from the windows, on one of those swinging brackets. You could pivot it to improve the angle when watching it, but when not watching, it wouldn't compete with the fireplace for attention.

I'd also try a darker rug, closer to the floor colour. Will make the room seem larger and more soothing.
