The increased size is very likely the result of the longer growing season. It may be that the increased size points to a need for a longer cure than normal perhaps to get a better husk, otherwise you may actually not have any real issue - hard to say, unless they did switch the variety on you. It is a bit strange that you are getting a different husk pattern this year.

Despite the thin skins, these Degroot onions ended up storing well anyway. They are so pungent, it is not surprising they store so well, even when things don't go perfectly. Great for cooking, and I still have about 50lbs left.

So all's well as ends well. Sounds like you have a very dependable variety that will do you good under a variety of conditions. That sort of dependability is about as good as it gets.
