Food at the Fall Swap

For the Fall Plant Swap on October 3rd, I'd like an idea of the food you are bringing. It keeps us from having 15 pies, 10 cakes and nothing else.

As the host, I'll prepare a couple of smoked turkey breasts, as well as provide paper plates, plastic ware, glasses and napkins.

Does anyone have one of those glass beverage dispensers they could bring? I'd like to serve water from one, but don't own one. We usually go through a lot of water.

We have some great cooks on this forum. I'm getting hungry just thinking about the lunch!

    Hi Flowerridge,

I'm still sorta not in Colorado right now, but watching what's going on here, and I have a 2 gallon water dispenser that I'll bring along--full! It's not a "pretty" glass one, just a clear plastic square thing, but it has a "valve" to fill glasses from and it works pretty well. (And it got empty amazingly fast at the last swap I had at my house!) I'll also, as usual, bring the sign-in sheet and the "numbers" for the first rounds of picking. Will keep an eye out here and add other things if necessary!

Have NO idea at this point what I'll be bringing to eat! Will figure that out at some future date when I'm home and have more time to "contemplate!"

Thanks for getting this all going,

    Skybird

Can I bring lemonade and dispensers for it again? I can also do tea/sweet tea if anyone would like.

Skybird, the water dispenser sounds great. I'll have a couple extra gallons here to refill if needed. Yes, please bring the sheets and drawing numbers. I was hoping you would!

Lizbest1, lemonade/sweet tea would be wonderful! I'm a water drinker, so I simple don't know which or both folks will go for. Anyone remember from past swaps?

I know I will go for either lemonade or sweet tea. Course, unsweetened tea isn't actually ice tea in my opinion (I am 1/2 Southern after all lol).

I can bring some habanero jelly and crackers with cream cheese. I'll have to look and see what flavor jelly I have left from last year though.

I can bring a huge 10(?) gallon Igloo dispenser for water but you'll have to provide the water - I can barely lift that thing when it's empty! :) Let me know.

I'll do some kind of a salad and a dessert.

(BTW, Zach, the orange tomatoes were amazing! Thank you again!)

The Igloo thingy might be 5 gallon...It's kept a whole father-son campout hydrated, though, so it should suffice.

I will bring some Asian cold noodles that I brought to the Spring swap. Several of you have messaged me for recipe or asked me to post the recipe in the forum. My concern is that it may be hard to get the ingredients from regular supermarkets. I will just post the simple recipe that I typed up for a friend in the past. I don't really cook with measuring cups or spoons. Hopefully this helps.

    Prepare
a bowl, put: dice a bag of pickles (see link below), tiny bit of ginger, green
onions (white part), tiny bit of sugar, black pepper and white pepper

prepare another bowl for fresh diced garlic cloves and green part of green onions

    Prepare
hot/sizzling oil from stove, break some dry chilli peppers and corn
peppers in the oil. As soon as the chilli turn brown (not overly
burnt), dump the oil in the first bowl. (you should hear the sizzling
sound of oil mixed with what you have in the bowl).

dump the garlic and green onions in the same bowl. and add the following:

sesame oil, soy sauce, oyster sauce

Amy, glad the orange tomatoes did well for you! They were by far the best producers in the garden this year for me, and definitely earned a re-invite in the future!

Back to food! I have some pineapple and I think guava hab jelly left, and I also made a batch of Thai pepper/Thai basil jelly the other day, does anyone have any preferences for which one(s) I should bring?

Gosh, what to bring?! I made some salsa with Hatch chilies last night, so maybe I'll bring a jar of that with some chips, if no one else already spoke up for that. Oh, maybe I'll bring some lemon-lime bars too!

I was thinking of bringing another banana bread like I did for the spring swap, but I'm not seeing much dessert type stuff listed, so maybe I'll make it brownies instead! Anybody have a preference for either of those???

Am also thinking of making some homemade cranberry sauce to go with the turkey FlowerRidge is providing!

Well, Skybird, if you're going to make cranberry sauce to go with turkey, we need someone to volunteer up a pumpkin pie and we'll just make it an early thanksgiving! (and then we get two thanksgivings this year how awesome is that?!)

    I do a good pumpkin cheesecake... :)

    Sold, Amy! Sounds amazing!

I agree, that sounds wonderful! If you'll do that, Amy, and Misty mentioned maybe bringing lemon-lime bars, which also sounds wonderful to me, then I'll plan to bring the banana nut bread again, which will be to go with the "main course"--and the cranberry sauce too!

I'm still planning to bring the 2-gallon water dispenser too, and since it's not going to be hot this time, and with not too many people--and with Lizbest's lemonade and tea--I think that will probably be enough. I don't think you need to go to the trouble of bringing your BIG water dispenser along this time, Amy.

So excited to visit again! Looking forward to Saturday!

Ok....I was playing along with the Thanksgiving theme, y'all! The kitchen is pretty much out of commissions (we're Sawzall-ing the trusses tonight!) so any culinary contributions I make will come in retail packaging. :( I hate not being able to bake in the fall! Maybe I can manage pumpkin bread, that's a one-bowl, one-bake undertaking...hmmmm......

LOL! At the very first swap in spring of '07, at SingCharlene's, her kitchen was TOTALLY out of commission, being remodeled, and the only usable sink she had was the bathroom sink! We'll be looking for some flavor of cheesecake from you next time, Amy!

Zach! You're up for pumpkin pie!!! Hey, don't blame me! You're the one who brought it up! Seriously, if you can bring some sort of a "dessert thing," let me know, otherwise I'll go with the brownies and probably skip the banana bread.

Spring swap = italian-style lemon cheesecake, made in my glorious new kitchen where the drawers have sides and fronts, the walls lack holes, and the countertops aren't peeling apart! JOY!

I do think I might be able to swing some pumpkin bread depending on the level of detritus piled 'round the oven...otherwise, I'll shoot from the hip and bring some kind of veggie/fruit tray - sound good?

Hey, I'll do p-pie! No problem! Veggie tray (or something) sounds perfect Amy, and banana bread, too. Not that brownies and pumpkin bread don't sound good (You know though, it IS October, I'm not sure it's actually possible to go overboard on pumpkin flavored food this time of year). However, I have a small addiction to pie so if we have to choose between brownies, pumpkin bread, or pie, well, you know my vote.

I am thinking of bringing a pot of vegetarian chili. With bowls and spoons.

Hope you are serious about the pie, Zach, 'cause I'll skip the brownies then! I'll do the banana bread--I'm thinking of making a double batch and putting nuts in half of it for with "dinner," and chocolate chips in the other half for "dessert!" And homemade cranberry-orange sauce is in the works! And! When I looked at the cranberry bag I saw a recipe for cranberry bread, so, time permitting, I'll make that too! No promises on the last one!

That, with the 2-gallon water dispenser, plants--and ME!

    Skybird

P.S. Just to reconfirm, FlowerRidge, also the numbers for picking and the sign-in sheet! And a pile of blankets for sitting on!!! And a camera!!!!! AND Hibiscus seed pods!!!!!!!

    :-D

I am serious, I'll bring pie tomorrow! I just have to find my recipe now and hot the store.

I have two turkey breasts in the smoker...and, boy, are they starting to smell good!

I can smell them all the way up here!!!

    Skybird

P.S. I haven't gotten around to eating yet today! Just grabbed three cherry tomatoes when I was out digging up Ajuga!

Oh my, flowerridge - you are awesome!!

I ran out of some ingredients that I need for the noodles. I will bring some rice instead. See you all tomorrow.

I hope I have enough filling to make two pies, if I only make one, there is a 30% chance it won't live to see tomorrow.

PS I love smoked turkey, in fact I don't think that there is a better way to cook it!
