Furniture dilemma in Fam Room

I need help and suggestions since I am redoing our family room. We recently added a fireplace and I want to buy some new couches, or sectional and or chairs!! I really can't make up my mind or make a commitment- I like the open airy look - we do love to watch TV and lounge. With the new television being up so high it is nice to be back further to watch TV. My husband pretty much lays on the couch to watch TV. Maybe I could change that LOL. I like the look of the matching sofas which is what I had previously (the dog ate one of them in a recent anxiety attack while locked inside the house ) but in our living room I can't put them across from each other very well because it affects the layout and natural flow from the kitchen. I put the two sofas at right angles previously but now wonder if I should get a sectional instead. I'm scared to do this because I know it limits my options. I've also always had a couch against the wall of windows and feel that leaving it there with just one or two chairs in front would love too stark. Currently we have a hodgepodge of chairs to fill the space until we get some new furniture. I want to choose a later sand color and I'm thinking about adding a light colored rug as well. You can see from the before remodel picture that I did have a large fluffy white rug and the2 sofas . Please help! I'm open to ideas and suggestions as I can't make up my mind

Also, post pictures from the windows looking into the area across the room. Is that your kitchen or dining room? More info the better.

Hello May! How many people do you want to be able to sit in your room at once? Do you use it just for watching TV? Do you gather to talk there? Do you entertain there? Given, it is next to the kitchen (assumption), I bet the overflow from entertaining goes into this room.

If this room is more for watching TV, a sectional isn't such a bad idea. Try to get one that is under 103x103 (it looks like a somewhat small room). However I do love having a sofa and a couple loungey chairs instead of a sectional. Like you say, it breaks up the room and allows more flow through.

Another way to add seating is to have a couple of poufs under a sofa table (if one fits) or in a corner that you can pull out if people are hanging out talking.

I've attached a picture of a room much like yours where a family of 5 sits and watches TV.

Yes, we need dimensions of room.

Looks like a gorgeous room with lots of light! Enjoy!

Thanks for the great comments! We usually only have 3-5 maximum at a time watching TV, ( mostly) or talk. We don't do a lot of formal entertaining, 2-3 times per year maybe. Yes the kitchen and eating area is right next to it as well as a bar/with stools that connects it to the kitchen .

I believe the room is 20x20.

    Hi May,

I would place the sofa facing the TV directly. Put two lounge chairs on the far side, near the windows and MAYBE a shorter chair near the kitchen, IF anything at all. Or maybe just a poof. I wouldn't use a puffy/ furry rug as it will make it feel smaller. To warm it up, I would use a Kilim or a flat weave rug that will provide warmth but not feel bulky. If any one likes sitting on the floor to watch TV, then, by all means, get a wool rug with a nice cushy rug pad! ( I love a nice big pillow and sitting on the floor sometimes!). If more people are watching a game or something, pull your stools in from the kitchen, or a couple dining chairs. No need to fill the space by any means. By the way, the rug should be big enough that at least the front legs of each piece of furniture sits on the rug, to complete a grouping. Happy Shopping!

So I love this cowhide rug I have now. How do I layer it on another rug like I've seen in other photos? Or should I ditch that idea?

Also I remeasured and our space is basically 18x18. The length of the current sofa is 88 inches

May, I would not layer a rug on top of another rug. Rugs are about grouping. You could drape it over something or hang it or just use it as a rug with no other rug. Layering rugs on others just makes rooms look smaller. If you MUST layer, especially if your furniture grouping won't fit on it, I would put a flat weave rug that is almost the size of the room down and lay the cowhide rug on it.
