Dining room ...where to start?

Hi all. I am a long time lurker, having enjoyed learning from all of you! We moved to this lovely expansive 1930's Garrison colonial in February. The DR is in lovely shape but want to update it and fit better with my style, which is traditional with some modern (simple lines) sensibility. The wallpaper needs to go.

I replaced a very ornate crystal chandy with the one in the pix, which I am really happy with. The furniture has to stay too, but new window tx and walls are needed. I don't know what to do at all and hope some of you incredibly creative folks can help me with some color nd window ideas.also attached pix of the adjoining LR and breakfast rooms. The LR is a good example of what I am comfortable with. The breakfast rm is a bit too fussy, due to the wallpaper. Sorry for the messiness and thanks in advance to the design braintrust!

Are the blue elegant parson like chairs staying? If so I would begin looking at some blues.

    They are taupe

With the light you have in the living room, I would lean towards a very soft and subtle yellowy gold for the walls. That's what I have in our living room which has similar lighting. I love the way it reflects light especially in the mornings.

Just spent the afternoon at Calico corners and found some fabrics for inspiration. I will post pix tomorrow and hope for some critique....ironically after stating I do not want gray, prints with grays and gold appealed to me the most

I would remove the wallpaper everywhere if it is not to your taste. Get rid of the balance and hang curtain panels on rods similar to the ones you have In The LR. Lovely home!

Lovely home. I agree to take down the valances and hang curtains. Perhaps if you wanted to go darker in the dining room you could dress up the bottom of the chair rail. Or take it down.

I love both of these but especially the first one.

I was attracted to these fabrics...what do you think? They are on my DR table.

I like the top one, just slightly more but it is almost 3x the price of the other. If I used that one, maybe wainscoating on the bottom in creamy white with taupy-gray walls above chair rail?? Drapes or relaxed Roman shades?

    Or nix both?

The swatch in your first picture above will complement the table and chairs far more than the second. i like the paint colors you've chosen to go with it also.. However, your dining room doesn't exist in a vacuum----what colors are in the surrounding rooms? That would be another consideration when choosing decor for a room open to others in the public space of your home.

I think it's a very pretty combination. Calico Corners is really pricey and you may be able to find that same fabric at a better price elsewhere, did you get the name of it by any chance?

Don't know manufacturer . It is called Latika limestone. The adjoining LR which is visible from DR , and vice versa, is a beige by BM, forget the color name . Couch is beige ivory linen, chairs paisley rust olive ivorys, gold tones in throw pillows. I think it would flow... pix above. The breakfast room is yellow but is pretty cut off from DR with a doorway. LR has an arch connecting with DR so you can see the 2 rooms

Happily right now CC has 25% off fabrics but thank you for a great idea to search for the fabric. I also like the quality of the work in my local CC so I might go for it. Would love some thoughts on window TX for that wide set of Windows.

Wow, it was 46 per yard at CC. Even with the discount this is so so much better. Thank yu!!! Now I have to figure out a drapery maker around here...Essex county NJ. . Any thoughts aboutt what would look good?

I can sew straight drapes, but I am too lazy now:-):-)

Out of stock at fabric guru...boo!

It sounds as though the first fabric and color combination will look great with the adjoining LR. Fantastic price on the fabric online!

As for window treatment, I would probsbly do panels at the far ends, and thinner (less width) panels on either side of the center picture window. One long continuous rod from which all panels hang, simple, lined, no pinch pleats or elaborate top treatment, just pins holding rings that slide across the rod. They won't actually slide, of course, you'd leave them in the same place always. A narrow black iron rod and 1" black iron (or iron looking) rings. Instead of pleats you'll have natural folds at the top between the rings.

I'd love a pale gray/blue wallpaper in a subtle pattern with crisp white woodwork. This is Thibaut Bastille:

And this Thibaut Tulsi block print in light blue would be nice with crisp white woodwork too:

Add white sheers & a pale rug. I think either of these would work well with your light woods, your dark wood china hutch, & coordinate well with the warm beige living room. I like your new chandelier very much.

    Beautiful , especially #1.

I like that first wallpaper. It looks like it could really pull everything together without being more beige.

You'd need to rethink draperies -- probably a simple solid. I like simple and would probaby favor natural linen or a silk panel, but you could get a lot of different looks with sheers, lace, burlap, even a velvet depending on how casual or formal you want to go.

Here's the Tulsi block print on a wall to get an idea of scale. It comes in pale aqua too, which would also be beautiful in msrgardner' DR.

I'm in the process of working with someone on Etsy to make some valances for us. I would turn there to find someone. There were people locally to me listed on there but the styles they offered in pictures of their work didn't appeal to me. I had a bathroom valance done this way a few years ago and it was perfection. If you want to look at the store for the woman I'm going to use, message me and I'll be happy to provide you with her information. I just don't know if she does drapes. She may though and her work is emaculent.

I love the look of the first picture atkillery posted! I'd probably go a little darker with the chairs tho. LOVE the wall color.

lots of wonderful suggestions. Have to think about it all but I at least I have starting point now. Thank you!! I will check back in after the holiday tomorrow and Tuesday. Peace to all.

It's a beautiful room, msrgardner. It will turn out pretty whatever you decide to do with it.

I think that fabric plays well with your furnishings.

My dining room has been pretty well transformed and I thought you might like to see the almost final result. I am just waiting for a simple stencil to arrive and will do it in white just under the crown molding. Here's the result of your help and suggestions.

I think the transformation is absolutely lovely, and can’t wait to see the stenciling done. Great job! So glad that you took advantage of an Etsy vendor, too!

Wow, this is pretty amazing! It looks cozy and casual-elegant. What is the paint color?

Lovely transformation!!!! So warm and inviting!

Your room turned out really well! I love the warm browns, creams, & wood tones together. Yes, please tell us what the paint color is.

It is Cole Stone by Benj Moore

Very nice transformation! Love the wall color.

Beautiful! It turned out very peaceful. Elegant without a hint of pretentiousness. I like your mirror and the artwork!

the wall color actually is a bit lighter that it shows in the pix. It's a grayish-brownish- taupe and is a perfect match to the grayish-brownish-taupe in the shade fabric above. The stencil will mirror some of the curves in the fabric. I figured if it is too much, I can always paint over it.

I know the mirror is a bit high... but trying to avoid having people see themselves as they eat (I hate that, myself).

Looks like a good color and like that it matches the fabric. Have you tried letting the shades down just a tad? I think I might like to see a little more of the fabric and have a little more relaxed feel to them. You could play a bit -- maybe lower the center (to about a third) and leave the sides or visa versa. I know you want the view and the light but for me the large center window looks a bit severe -- like a ponytail pulled so tight the eyes are pulled too. KWIM? Plus I like your fabric and wall color and would like to see them play together just a bit more. It's tweek on a job well done though. And you don't have to agree. ;)

yeah, my husband wanted the shades as high up as possible to have as much sunlight as possible. I like them down further too. The fabric is really pretty with the wall color. Once he is used to it all,, I will lower them LOL

    last modified: 9 years ago

Sneak them down an inch or two at a time. If he's anything like my DH, he won't even notice. I find that sometimes the best place to hide something from these guys is right under there noses. I could probably lower them 6 inches and he wouldn't notice -- or would walk through and say something about how he really likes the new shades. LOL

Shades down. Let's see if anyone realizes it

I like the window treatments, and the wall color is good, but I think that either above or below the chair rail, that there should be a lighter color, which will brighten up the room a lot. The room is a lot better with all of the wall paper removed. I would put the stencil that you are waiting for above the chair rail, so it is more noticeable, and I would use a metallic paint for that. Just a little bling!

Great idea to give a stencil some shine. Thank you. When it arrives I will post the final pict. I did think about a different shade above chair rail but wanted a more cohesive feeling after taking down the very powerful wall paperbut although you cannot tell from pix from my tablet's crummy camera it is an incredibly sunny room and in real life is not anywhere near dark as it looks here. Thanks all for your kind and helpful comments

    Good luck!

Stencils done. Thank you K Sissy for the metallic paint suggestion. A fantastic suggestion. Dont know how clearly the pictures illustrate, but the room looks great with gold metallic paint rather than the

white or monochrome that I had thought about. . The gold picks up the accents, chandelier and tones in the window treatments. I went back and forth about stencilling over chair rail or under crown molding but went for less prominent ... Happy holidays and new year.
