It is a fly of some kind (not a moth or a bee). If someone chips in with the fly family, perhaps we can get a species for you.

There are quite a few species of flies with the dark chevron pattern in the wings.

Hi, thanks so much for your fast and informative response. I didn't think flies could have these types of wings. I did think it had fly like eyes, but I was rather unsure about it prior to your input. It would be great to find out family and species also.

What is the approximate size of this insect (absolutely a Dipteran as suggested).

Have you seen many of them? What have you noticed about behavior....resting on leaves, hovering around plants, etc.?

This was my first and only time seeing one of these. It was on a butterfly bush plant cutting I recently planted. It let me take pictures and video of it rather close and stayed still from the moment I saw it until I stopped looking at it. There was a mild breeze that caused the plant to sway and it seemed to trigger the wings to slightly flutter for a second perhaps to maintain its balance, but the fly held on to the leaf it was resting on. I watched the animal in total for probably 4 minutes, and I did not see it fly somewhere else or do anything else. I would have to guess the size from head to its backend being slightly under an inch and maybe from wingtip to wingtip an inch to maybe a little over an inch, but I could be wrong. So as of now I have not seen more behavior from these flies, since I have only seen this one fly this only time.

Thanks again for your help! I was thinking my linked picture at least looked similar in general appearance but not species, but you got a better/perfect match with the species. It sure is an interesting looking fly and based on appearance I can see where it gets its name of bee fly, but it could make one think it was bee. It definitely was interesting to see this fly that seems distinct from other flies we may be more familiar with.

I was thinking of bee fly, too, but couldn't find one similar. Good work!
