Let the leaves go yellow and fall on their own (don't tug on them, either, another poster here learned the hard way that this can damage the plant beyond recovery). Even half alive, they are helping support the plant.

The rest of the plant looks healthy. Put it near a window that doesn't get too much full sun. When you water, make sure that all the water has drained out completely. Either fill it up with water, put your hand over the bark, and tip the water out, or pull the inside pot out and let water run through in the sink for a minute or two. Don't let any water collect in the bottom.

here's an update of my Phal, today i watered it (7am). I used a 20-20-20 dilued to 1/4 fertilizer.

To my surprise the phal is in a transparent pot and from most of the draining holes roots are coming out, so there's not much draining. I tilted and gently shake it to drain as much water as i could.

The two bulbs bloomed beautifully, and a new bulb is growing .

I can see a lot a roots squeezed in the pot, and I'm thinking to repot but i'm afraid to stress the plant, specially for the new bulb that's growing.

Where do you live? What kind of light is the plant getting? The roots look good, I would wait until Spring to repot. Please provide more info.

Thanks Jane. I live in Edmonton, Canada. The city is dry, so I have a humidity tray. My plan is not directly under the air vent, but it is really close, so it has a nice air flow (temp always between 20 and 24 Celcius). I live in a basement suite, but it gets south light and because days are getting shorter I leave lights on when is cloudy. Do you know how many hours a day should they have light? I'm familiar with the weather coditions in south Mexico, and it's what I'm trying to replicate for my little baby, what do you think?

Your plants roots look good and healthy. As long as they don't sit in water and can 'almost' dry out between waterings, that is good also.

I grew Phals in NY for many years and during winter I put a 'winter coat' over the surface roots with some sphag moss and kept it moist. My house got very dry in winter and it helped keep some humidity around the roots. I also sat the plants in a humidity trays but found it really didn't help much.

The best thing is to keep the plants warm over winter without too many cold drafts from the windows. I never had a problem They bloomed very well.

But they need bright light. If your windows can't supply it, a simple floor lamp with CFLs will get them through until Spring.
